Empty derelict properties that haven't been inhabited in a long time I can understand, but breaking into peoples houses?

So technically, someone could go on holiday and squatters could move in whilst they are away?

Technically, you could pop out to the shops for a pint of milk and they could move in.

Err no thats not true - Displaced Residential Occupier rules prevent that kinda thing - a DRO can use violence and force to evict if necessary smile

Yes, but what determines if you are a DRO (wft is that?). So if one goes on holiday, or leave the house to building work, for a month and come back to squatters - is one justified in using force to evict?

It's very hard to squat in a burning building wink

(3) Subject to subsection (4) below, any person who was occupying any premises as a residence immediately before being excluded from occupation by anyone who entered those premises, or any access to those premises, as a trespasser is a displaced residential occupier of the premises for the purposes of this Part of this Act so long as he continues to be excluded from occupation of the premises by the original trespasser or by any subsequent trespasser.

Ie. If you pop out to the shops, you are still a resident there, if you go on holiday and come back, you are still a resident there - You still live there - and the law says you can use REQUIRED force to evict trespassers.

Squatters = fking scum, should be shot on sight, and their bodies hung from lamp posts.

Unfortunately, DRO's don't apply if the house is having building works done to it.

You're quite correct, of course smile I was trying to suggest that the tossers will try and get their feet under your table given any opportunity.

Unless you live in it ofcourse. Or pay a couple of builders from the local pub 100 quid each cash in hand to handle the situation

I actually agree with squatting in some circumstances.
Some squatters took over an abandoned block of flats near me. All the windows were smashed on one side and the place had been like that for years. No one cared about it.
They replaced the broken windows with wooden boards and then painted nice paintings on them.

Turned what was once a horrible stheap of a place into a much more interesting view.

only way to get into my house is to break into it, if someone squatted my house, would do what ever it took to get them out, would not bother with the police as they would stop me doing stuff

Someone broke into a friends of mine's property while he was out walking his dog - he broke a window, let his dog through, funnily enough the squatters came running out afterwards.

... and then? Please don't say they just ran away.
