Other half had cause to call out the AA this week for a flat tyre. He changed it and checked the others. She rewarded him with a tip..£10. It got me thinking, is this normal, how many times a week (or day) would they get a tip and do they ever get any other "Perks" ?

She told you she rewarded him with a tenner anyway. Did she look red and flustered and have an imprint of the phrase 'Snap-On' on her arse when she got in? wink

Hell no. Your paying for the breakdown service anyway, its not as if they are doing you a favor.

Surely you could argue that about any tip?

I'm genuinely surprised so far, would've thought a fiver was normal on at least half of callouts. Maybe I need to rein in the spending.

I always give them at least a fiver, sometimes more if they really try their best to sort something.

Not since the last time - it's a bit of a pain signing the register each year.

Remind anyone else of the opening scene to Reservoir Dogs?

Mr. Pink: I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's fcensoredd up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fcensoreds in the ass on a regular basis. Look, if you ask me to sign something that says the government shouldn't do that, I'll sign it, put it to a vote, I'll vote for it, but what I won't do is play ball. And as for this non-college bucensoredit I got two words for that: learn to fcensoredn' type, 'cause if you're expecting me to help out with the rent you're in for a big fkin' surprise.

I had to call out the AA recently. Two drivers had to ferry me home in a relay. Both commented they would not accept cash any more as they get caught out with 'mystery' shoppers and feedback forms online nowadays.

I did manage to buy them both a coffee at the services though which they accepted.

I've offerred them tips or a few tins of beer but they've always refused. Sometimes they go beyond the call of duty imo. Last guy unloaded my car and then pushed it into my workshop with me steering from the driving seat. He didn't have to do that yet he still refused a tip. Top bloke I say.

patrol men are allowed to take tips as they are taxed a set amount on them every year. my mate regularly recieves a fiver or tenner or a bottle of wine etc, or whatever they have in the boot of the car. he has had sandwiches, pasties, cheese or even cigarettes given to him.

Last time I tried this with an AA guy he recoiled in horror and said he appreciated the sentiment but it could cost him his job.

No.

I don't tip the binman or checkout staff when I'm doing the weekly shop either. Or just about anybody else employed to do nothing more than the normal course of their job. If people go above and beyond/bend their official code of conduct in some way to make my life a bit easier in some way, then a few £ in their hand and a complimentary letter to their employer are in order.

I get paid adequately by my employer to do the job I do to a standard acceptable to their customers. I don't expect those customers to pay me any more for doing that job well and am genuinely embarrassed when some occasionally do buy me a bottle of something as a thank you. I don't understand it really. It's just doing the job I'm paid to do.
