I don't think it's a joke, it's owned by an aristocrat, and they don't like poor people or foreigners, they do half-assed jobs but they do like perving girls in bikinis while looking down on them. All makes sense really.

I don't want to close down the press but if there was one that's it. No paper better tuned into its audience or its fears though

I've just learnt that it's possible to write really long thread titles now.

Thanks OP!

I thought most papers were full of rubbish? Daily mail does seem to get mentioned more than most, Cant see the sun or similar being "better"

Presumably when somebody reads the Mail they're a joke but when they pick up and read another paper on the same day they transform magically into something unfunny. How odd.

If the reader is not intelligent enough to be able to read through what is true, and what is not, then the reader should not be reading ANY paper to be honest.

Newspaper snobbery is more pathetic than supermarket snobbery IMO.

Judging by some of the comments on this forum, there are a lot of really, really dumb people who cannot distinguish fiction from reality and therefore should stay out of all newspapers for their own safety.

It is a newspaper. Get over yourself.

The same can be said about any newspaper whose politics you don't share. The Mirror, for example, creases me up at times.

Having said that, the Mail's editorial standards are shocking at times.

I recall about twelve years ago they printed a big article on how the wool in some kind of pashmina-type garment was endangering the animal from which the wool was derived. Then a special reader offer in the same paper for exactly the same garment.

My main issue is that because it doesn't have a red-top or tits on page 3 people who read it tend to assume it is a proper newspaper.

You could easily make the same mistake about The Guardian and The Independent except for size matters.

If somebody has the nous to spot these differences presumably they can also differentiate between 'Lady Di Abducted by Aliens on Order of Prince Philip' and something on transport policy or the cost of motoring as Ray Massey used to write in the Mail.

Everybody who reads the Daily Mail knows the score. So, the OP is correct in his assertion that the readers are in on the joke. The readers know that it is all wrong, but they have fun trying to find stories that they disagree with.

On the other hand, the Independant is just deceitful. It pretends to be politically neutral, yet it constantly pursues a left wing/Republican agenda.

The Guardian is filled with self-righteous nonsense and hypocrisy.

The only newspaper that reports news without too much bias is the Financial Times. I was surprised to discover that it doesn't only cover financial matters.

It was the Sunday Telegraph that broke the 'racingdude' story. The Mail is a comic but they did give the 'Carry On' DVDs away recently!

It's one of the few things that actually has me laughing out loud, quite literally rolling on the floor with tears running down my cheeks and I just can't breathe. Which is quite embarrassing when you're in McDonald's.

What amazes me, on journeys on public trainsport, is when you see people with the pulp papers, how long it takes them to get through it. I mean there's rarely much text anyway, let alone challenging new concepts or complex factual content to absorb. That's one of those times when you realise what 'average' means.

That and when you, yet again, find yourself stuck behind a Citroen/Wanxhall people carrier seemingly being driven by someone who has just overdosed on tranquilisers.

Depending on your personal point of view on various topics, the same could be said of all newspapers and pretty much all news media bar Private Eye . . . . . The Gurniad has a similar effect on me as the Mail does to the OP

went to my uncle's house

he had a pile of past daily mail papers in the corner with the latest edition on the table.

i stopped taking his views seriously from that moment on.

frown i wish i could disown him as my uncle now. he still denies gravity.
