Metro 2033 broke my pc

Guys, really need your help. I downloaded metro 2033 from steam tonight as I fancied playing something new and it has completely screwed my pc. Now I have components which should technically be "optimal settings". 16g ram, quad core processor and a dual graphics card with standalone gpu.
So, I boot the game and my screen goes blank and then my monitor gives me the message "out of range", a message usually reserved for when you try and crank the graphics too much. So I alt+f4 and shut down the system but on restart I get the same message and it won't even let me look at windows. I can however start and view in safe mode.
Any ideas on how I can get my computer back?

Try clicking Fn + F4 if you have it on your keyboard a few times, might have pressed it by mistake instead of alt which means your graphics card is trying to output to a different monitor as opposed to your defualt. Keep pressing and it cycles through.

From the safe mode options when pressing F8, isn't there a:
"enable low resolution graphics"?

Try that.

Does the game have a safe mode or cofig util that you can run first to check settings before launching?

Out of range usually means the program is telling the monitor to run at a refresh rate it doesn't support. Happened to me because Madden08 default setting is 29Hz for some reason. If you can get in to change it 60 should be a safe choice.

I don't have an fn on the keyboard so don't think it's that.

I'll have to see if there's a low graphics mode in safe mode. I mean safe mode itself loads fine with graphics...all be it limited graphics, but it just won't start normally

I think a system restore might be the only way to go. Don't really want to but don't have much choice I guess

Without being able to get in to windows I'm not entirely sure. If you can boot up ok in safe mode are you able to change it there? Might need to google to see what ways there are of doing it without booting up properly. I don't think there is an option for that sort of thing in BIOS,

If it's windows 7 or vista it will have that option and I suspect it is with mad spec!

It will start the os normally but reduce only the graphics to the safe mode resolution until you change it back to what it was originally.

Hmm. Tis a rather annoying situation. I've just done a system restore an it appears that it was an nvidia driver that was causing the issue. Guessing that means that metro 2033 was 30 quid rather poorly spent. D'oh!

Without being able to get in to windows I'm not entirely sure. If you can boot up ok in safe mode are you able to change it there? Might need to google to see what ways there are of doing it without booting up properly. I don't think there is an option for that sort of thing in BIOS,

If it goes into safe mode OK, just change it the normal way and it'll save the setting for the next normal boot. At least that's the way it's always worked in the past; I've never tried it with 7.

type of Graphics card are you useing? if its a Nvidia and you have the latest drivers in your taskbar at the bottom right you should have Nvidia control pannel you can change the refresh rate in there.
if its ATI im sure it has a control pannel aswell but im not sure im a Nvidia fan boy lol.

I'm using an ATI Radeon HD 3850 dual graphics card. Looking at the system requirements it should be more than capable of coping with the game but it just doesn't seem to like the nvidia physx driver. Not sure there's. Safe mode on the game itself, looks like it's just a straight boot, and clearly that's not great as it just kills my graphics output
