IIRC the MK4 came with two different cup holders depending on the year, the following instructions look to be from the earlier cup holder but I'd imagine the principle is still the same since they occupies the same space regardless of the opening style.

^ Scroll down to #57 this is the only step you should need for the cup holder alone, the rest of the thread relates to a full dashboard dismantle/removal.
EDIT:
Steps 60 and 61 may also be of some use as it shows you how to replace the cup holder flap as I believe the cup holder comes flap-less when bought new.

Thought it better to revive this than start a new thread, I'm sure plenty of people in GG have had some experience with a MKIV Golf so any advice/experiences would be appreciated
Which is the better cupholder to buy? Adjustable arm later design or earlier fixed ring type? I don't want the arms failing or not providing enough resistance which is why I'm leaning towards the earlier type..
