Strange story here folks, just want to hear your thoughts/views.

Some of you may know I suffer from a spinal injury, broke my back in 5 places. Its tough but I manage with some help, and a great family.

Anyway, when in a spinal unit in Sheffield in late 03-early 04 they had a benefit advisor, who helped you.

On being let home I was on "Disability living allowance". which ill get for life, and "incapacity benefit" as unable to work.

Both these proved very helpful, however about 6 months after coming home I restarted my own business, so came off the "incapacity". Stayed on the "DLA" as its not means tested, for life, and I use it to pay for things that cost extra when your a dribberler like me, insurance and stuff.

Skip forward to yesterday, thought it about time I had the loft insulated, called council as they had put a leaflet through door, oh no problem sir, because you get "DLA" you get this done for free, happy days, wasnt expecting that but thank you.

She then asks do I want connecting to the benefits dept to see if im entitled to anything else, said no, im fine, I work, my wife works, life is pretty good so im fine. 11am this morning somebody from said benefits agency called to say Im entitled to more stuff, can they come and see me to sort out what.

Seemed really put out when I said no thanks.

So, question, am I being a plonker, should I grab all I can and sod the rest of ya, I was just never brought up like that, I work for what I have.

And there was me thinking we are trying to save money, seems this lot have so much of it they trying to give it out.

Won't hurt to have a chat with aforesaid agency and see what they could offer you. If you are comfortable with your lifestyle why not accept any increase in benefits and use it to occassionally treat those about you who have helped you since your injury ?

Yes you should see them straight away. Claim as much as you can and forward it on to Amanda in Grimsby, c/o The Corporation Arms.

It would appear that lazy workshy, stella guzzling chav needs it more than you.

I think this could give a more accurate picture of the benefits situation than "they're a lazy bunch of scavengers" that some people would have us believe. Evidently lots of people who really need extra help not only don't ask for it but actively refuse it. The council are trying to ensure that help gets to those who need it and not only those who ask for it.

You have a disability and rightly should be able to claim to make your life as easy as possible.

It's why the benefits system exists to help people like you, I don't see any scrounging here.

I can't see why anybody would want to deny a person with a valid disability a comfortable as possible life.

Now, if your chav scum or a multi multi millyannnnairrrr........

I know I know, its just I feel I get enough as it is, I get the "DLA" for life, have a blue badge and did make use of the free rd tax once.

And dont get me started on the NHS, I dread to think what they have spent on me over the yrs, saved my life, 4 weeks in intensive care and then 6 months in spinal unit, to me its the best health service in the world.

What i can say is that Amanda from Grimsby will be getting nothing from me.

Unfortunately you are wrong there. As a taxpayer, you are contributing to her weekly supply of Fosters and Lambert and Butler (duty free from her doley mate who has a sideline selling contraband)

Hats off to you sir for not taking the piss out of the benefit system, but as you probably know yourself, you are in the minority in a country bursting at the seams with Amandas.

Sticks.

Well how about using it to support a charity, like the SIA? Tbh, I'm not sure what else they're thinking of which wouldn't be means-tested, counting you out.

Not sure how you manage to run a business but well done clap

Take what is available to you and give it to a local charity...or even the spinal unit at the hospital you were treated at.

Do you pay tax?
If so, it's your money, not ours.

Take as much as you can get. You are entitled to it and you are not just looking to live life on the benefits as a career choice. You are in essence the type of person the benefit system is supposed to help.

If you don't spend the money on yourself, give it to charity.

You sound like an honest hard working individual if you are entitled to it take it, make good use of it. It wont be around for ever too many people
who are not really entitled to it milking the system.

You should take everything available to you.

If the taxman offered a cut you'd not refuse it, and this is just negative tax.

You paid into the system all the time you were working and now you are in need should take out.

If you are entitled to something then find out what you are entitled to and why, then tell us about it so we get a better view of the system rather than the "doley scum everywhere" and "benefits agency staff are all bar stewards" which is the common Daily Bigot view.

Then it's up to you whether you have the money but I'd say accept it and use it to treat those around you who have supported you, family, spinal unit, anyone at work?

A sponsorship of a PH meet to somewhere may be considered, let's say ooh Grimsby, I hear the Corporation Arms might make for an interesting few minutes... And we should be able to get a decent fish supper in Clethropees.

You sum up the differance in the UK, even though you are entitled to something, you feel you do not need it so do not claim, I admire you for your attitude and spirit. 95% of the others on here would claim because they get swept along by the get what you can attitude in the country.

I was listening to a whinger on the radio, her son was now in full time care due to disability, very sad, but they were moaning that they were now losing the motibility car they had when he was at home. "its not fair how will we visit him and take him out for a ride" she said, the same as everyone else buy one your self.

I argue with my FiL all the time, he is an ex miner, gets the winter fuel allowance as all OAPs do, but as an ex miner he gets free coal for life, his home is like a sauna as he burns his coal allowance, which we pay for again. suggest he doesn't need it que argument as it is his right!

Until we break the years of benefit ways we will not have a self reliant country

Form the OPs post I don't think he considers himself 'in need', and rightly so.

The OP has my upmost respect for the stance he's taken. We need more people like him, who can think reasonably about the welfare state and what they NEED to take out of it, and not just grab all they can get.
