So, a few hours to go, we know some certanties..

Ark Royal is going

The UK's Main Fast Jet Base. Lossiemouth, and the Nimrod base at Kinloss will be taken over by the lads coming home from Germany.

The Harrier fleet is more than likely to be canned.

we will get both the new carriers, but one will never see fixed wing activity, and neither can carry fixed wing till 2019..

Artillery Regiments will be hammered, my old lot (RHA) are rumoured to be losing 6 batterys of as90/light gun, 40 reg has been canned, and 16 Air Assault Brigade will be reduced by half.

so, in other words, if your a foreign country and have decent naval launched air cover, and a fair amount of ground troops, feel free to just walk in and take over, because we sure as hell wont have a chance of stopping you!

Should I start trying to talk my son out of his dream of joining one of the services in 3 years time?

We are going to flog one of the new carriers as soon as it's built.

About time we moved to a non-interventionist policy.

P.S. How many threads about the same subject?

If he's interested in the Navy, he'll need to apply and take his test now to stand a chance of joining in three years time. Especially in engineering.

He had ruled out the Navy, said he doesn't want anything to do with boats, just can't make his mind up between the Army and the Air Force.

I looked at the RAF last year (officer level) and the guy effectively told me there's no chance they are recruiting at that level at least 5 years. The guy in front of me was up for going in at 'trade' level (mechanic/maintenance) and he was turned away for 3 years...

My advice would be to manage your son's expectations... it won't be impossible but it won't be a case of walking in and signing on the dotted line...

Boats? Boats!?! I know the SDSR will be dramatic, but we'll still have some ships.

Still ships, it'll be the boats under the water that will sink them.

What do we have that they would want? We're a bankrupt miserable little island with no natural resources. Seriously what do you think the probability of your scenario happening is?

Warfare has changed. The world has changed and the country is broke. Cutting back on military has to be a priority given it would seem significantly less likely effect on economic recovery compared with education, policing and healthcare.

It's an extravagance we can no longer afford.

We have loads of natural resources, coal, oil and gas for starters. And given that a big chunk of our manufacturing base is devoted to arms of various sorts, then cutting military spending is not going to help a recovery.

Come on now, my point still stands unless you honestly believe that if we cut back the military budget inline with the rest of Europe someone is going to steal our coal?

The MoD has given the French and other European mainland countries a lot of contracts and st loads of the contracts within the UK are hilariously over budget representing piss poor value.

I agree though cuts shouldn't be directed at specialised engineering. Specialised engineering could easily be used to increase efficiency. I.e. how many of the worlds ships could ever touch a type 45 destroyer or the CVF?

You then don't need as many sailors, ships, maintenance crews etc.

It's crap on those employed of course but every other industry went the way of mechanisation long ago.
