Leather interiors

What makes leather such a popular material to trim car seats with?, I have never owned or driven a car with a leather interior but a few of my friends have leather in their cars. Although I love the smell of a brand new leather interior, I always find it quite uncomfortable. I tend to stick to it after sweating in the mid-day heat of the summer when I'm just wearing a pair of shorts and a t-shirt, its also very hot to touch if the car has been sat in the sun for a few hours.
Then there's the winter, it's always so cold to sit on when its frosty december.
Leather doesn't seem to remain in good condition for long either, my mate has a 3-series with black leather, and it has little white cracks and wrinkles on the shoulder supports, and the leather on the base of the seat has stretched with time (its gone all saggy and loose).

So why choose leather to trim a car interior?

Prestige... and if you look after it it does look good for a long time.

But your right if neglected it can look crap. The trouble is alot of people who buy modern cars with leather expect not to have to do any maintenance themselves

For the same reason people make shoes out of Leather... whilst being more expensive than manmade alternatives, its traditional, looks nice and speaks quality..

It's waterproof... which is great for when my roof leaks, or is in the boot.

In my experience, all the unpleasant substances which ooze out of small children via various orifices can be wiped off leather quite easily whereas they have a nasty habit of soaking into cloth and being very difficult to remove.

And there's plenty of cloth seats (velour) which are more annoying than leather... the seat material grabs a hold of whatever you're wearing when you try and move around in the seat to get comfortable. You move, your clothes don't.

Peugeot, take note.

Spent yesterday morning going over my full hide with Autoglym leather feeder/cleaner. First time I've done this in a year of ownership. It came up luverly!
