Grill on the alley is fantastic with a really good atmosphere and great service, only 2 mins in a taxi from the center of town

Good timing, I was about to look around for something similar for Sunday evening.

Looking for somewhere central (near the City Inn ideally) that does simple food really well - the person celebrating their birthday likes nothing more than a simple piece of nicely cooked fish with minimal fuss. I've looked at the suggestions made so far but any others would be great. We usually just have something in the City Inn and while it's nice enough they are getting a bit boring now smile

What's Livebait like? I've been meaning to try the one here in Leeds but haven't got around to it yet - reviews are mixed (as usual on the 'net) but the menu reads well.

Done alberts shed, and dukes grill (the non fine dining part of dukes92) on several occasions pretty good actually...

Oh and the best curry by far is Akhbars on liverpool st by the side of the science and industry museum, beats the curry mile hollow...

Simes.

I've lived and worked in Manchester for the last ten years and the Grill on the Alley is one of my favourite places to eat. It's not fine dining but is a polished example of what a decent grill restaurant should be like. I ate there as recently as last Monday. The steaks ate awesome and if it's your kind of thing, I'd recommend the baby scallop and bacon salad as a side too. The cocktail menu is also great as it was developed in conjunction with The Living Room chain of bars before the group split. Enjoy your meal, I'm sure you'll love it.

I wouldn't head to Rusholme if I was out to impress a girl, the restaurants there aren't too clever. It's ok for a wander round and the majority of the takeaways do decent kebabs but as already mentioned the city centre has two great curry places in the form of Akbars and EastzEast.
