PSP - worth it?

My son has been asking for a PSP as his Nintendo DS have finaly gave up.
I have been looking through some of the shops, but the selection of games on the PSP seems to be very limited when compared to that of the DS.
It will be mainly used when we go to see family for long car journeys or when camping etc.
Has anyone else got one and what do you thik of it?

I used to use my PSP as a portable video player, as well as playing games. Stopped that after a year or so, though, and now barely use it. The last time I used it was nearly a year ago, when GTPSP came out - played that for a month or so.
I haven't used my DS much for the last few years either though - though my friends and I started looking for a game we can play through as a team recently, so it's had some use.
Overall I'd say it depends on what he wants to use it for. As a portable media centre that plays games, the PSP is excellent, particularly with a large memory stick and custom firmware. On the other hand, if he only plays games and has no desire to do anything else, or has friends with DSs, then a DS (and a flashcart) would be the best option. Probably best to let him choose though.

I bought one on launch day and never used it, my main complaint being that it was too big and slow loading.
I recently bought a PSP GO as it appeared to solve these issues, it's much smaller and as it's completely digital you have no UMDs to piss about with. At the moment they're giving away 10 free games with it (decent games; Gran Turismo, Motorstorm, Fifa etc) which was what prompted me to get it, as we've got a 12 hour flight coming up. I've found though that I've been carrying it with me everywhere as it fits nicely in the pocket, it's only slightly longer than an Iphone and slightly thicker. Stick a 16gb memory card in it and you have 32gb space which is plenty for loads of games and movies.
We've also got a DS Lite and while I would recommend one of those too, it's really only good if you get a flash chip and memory card, and then only for games. You can't play movies on it. There are thousands of games, but they tend to be the more simplistic style, whereas the PSP has far less, and the PSP GO even fewer since it can only use games from the PS Store and they've only put a fraction of them on there so far. Another downside is the latest ones are stupidly expensive (£33+).
So on balance, if he wants to have lots of game choice, prefers the more simple arcadey games go for the DS, if he's happy with a smaller selection, wants more advanced games and watch movies as well, go for the PSP. As mentioned, the 3DS will be out soon, might be worth holding on for that if you're going for one.
