It's probably the waxstat that's gone. A few years ago they were about 35 quid (sorry, dont know how to fit one, always got a garage to do it at the time).

Or just replace with a manual choke conversion .... bit more faff for the g/friend on a daily basis (i.e. remember to use it / turn it off), but it fixes the problem for good. Think I've got a manual choke conversion for a Scirocco somewhere in the back of my garage ... dunno if it would fit ....

I'll try and get a haynes manual the weekend from the Libary. But thanks for the tip.

We had the same thing on our Golf (E reg 1.8GL). The garage said the carb had gone and we needed a new one. I wanted to buy a nice big Webber to stick on top but sadly my dad caved in and traded it for a Freelander.

Had similar problems on my wife's Golf '89 1.8GL. It's a feature of the crappy old Solex Pierburg carb I'm afraid. Vacuum secondary sometimes stick as well, but that can be sorted with carb cleaner. Many Astra/Cav's had similar problem, but VW complicated it further by adding about 3 vacuum valves and solenoids to it, oh and a manifold heater just in case ambient went really cold....... I had ours looked at a couple of times by independant VW specialist here in Lincoln. He replaced bits as necessary and eventually fault was fixed, but cost about 35-60ukp per time.

Unfortunately I have some experience of this. Apparently there are 3 things that go wrong here - waxstat, vacuum thingy and three point unit in that order.

Mine decided to run OK for 30 seconds and then refuse to pull the proverbial hat off head. I changed the waxstat and vacuum thingy which got it driveable but running very rich. Took it to VW dealer who bypassed the hot/cold warm up flap and reset the CO screw, seems OK now although mpg not quite as good as it was.

Autochoke sticking sounds like the waxstat*. It's fiddly to change (poor access, lots of pipes & wires to remove and remember where they went) but maybe worth a try.

The newsgroup uk.rec.cars.vw.watercooled is full of people with similar carb problems and solutions.

Cheers,

* the waxstat is a little cylinder full of wax with a rod sticking out of it. As the wax expands the rod sticks out further and closes the choke. They can leak, which IIRC means the choke stays on and the car idles at about 2500rpm.
