So the queen is going to name a ship.

Fine

Not wanting to turn this into a royal bashing thread but.

Are cunard paying the queen or does she do it as a freebie? As cunard are going to get a lot of extra cash from yanks as they love the queen

seriously, does it matter if its called billy bloggs or hte queen elizabeth,

its quite an honour to have a ship named after you regardless of whether you are the queen or not!, i doubt any money will change hands, its just a sign of respect on both parts. they want the name, and HM is kind enough to grant them permission to use it...

I thought it was more of a tradition - regardless, I hope the ship is better built than their cars.

Isn't this just another Cunard ship like the QE2, Queen Mary, Queen Mary 2 Queen Victoria etc etc?

So you think queenie is doing it as a freebie.

As it will bring in alot of money to Cunard who i am sure are now an american company.

So is the UK getting stuffed here if she is doing it as a freebie

its not a case of HM doing it as a freebie more out of respect. as i said, its a huge honour to have a ship named after you and the polite thing to do in this case is laucnh the ship yourself. we have a strong cruiseliner/naval heritage and if you dont understand that this is not a money making exercise then its fine, but i dont know anyone who has ever been paid to launch a ship bearing their name bar probably some z-list celebrities who turn up to envelope openings....

look at it this way, the uk economy will get some of the benefits as uk people will make up some of the staff on board, her home port is southampton... you are right, Cunard are now a US company but they are pretty clued up on the heritage of the company.

and what price do you think is commensurate? few people will sail on her simply becase of the name, more so that they will sail on her becuase of the grandeur, exclusivitiy and style. it will be the same ship if its called "bob"...

So the queen won't have a little side number called rent-A-queen
