Ok, posibly the wrong section, but here goes..

Just got off the phone with the girlfriend and her car has broken down, luckily outside her house. The description she has given me of the problem amounts to a smell of burning, the whole car shuddering and 'a light' has come on on the dashboard which i can only make out as the engine management light. I know, not the best description in the world, but until i see the car i cant work any more out.

Oh, the car is a 2002 Ford Ka.

Any ideas??

Sounds like ignition. Give everything a good douse of WD40. Mine does it once a year when it gets damp.

Coil pack broken causing a misfire and unburnt fuel to burn off in the cat.

I bet if she looks underneath she'll see the cat glowing red hot and st herself. Don't run the car.

I'd hazard a guess and say yes, but what's left of it is on fire.

The light is the handbrake light. The burning smell is the rear drums.

It's a Ford. HTH wink

Seriously though, that's classic for one of the plugs not firing, a friend of mine at work had it on her TT last week. So that's either coil pack or HT lead, whichever that particular engine is fitted with.

i would have taken a guess at coil pack, sounds similar to what happened with my old fiesta when that went. Going to go take a good look at the car in a bit, see what i can make of it. Make sure she's actually managed to put oil and water in it....

This....

Coil packs are a common failure on KA's, and if she kept driving it whilst shuddering (misfiring to you and me) then the cat will have got a little on the warm side

coil pack does seem the most likely suspect!!

Okay so new question then, anyone care to hazard a guess at how much a garage would charge for this kind of work?? or how hard it would be for me to attempt this myself??

Should be an easy DIY, it's right on top of the engine.
Don't get a cheap ebay coil pack, or you will be Mechanic On Call forevermore.
