What is the minimum amount of H/D space I need to have to install and run Linux?

I'm only going to install one single program on the system.

What is it that you need - there are even linux distributions which can fit on one boot CD, so you dont even need to install it!!!

Alternatively, you can get Linux on a single floppy (with little functionality) or all the way upto 1GB with all of the options installed.

Better to say what you need and then working out the minimum space from there is easy....

You've not installed the nice new Fedora Core from RedBloat then

This is a df from an "everything" install.....

bash$ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 2.0G 332M 1.6G 18% /
/dev/sda1 97M 13M 80M 14% /boot
/dev/sdb1 2.0G 247M 1.6G 14% /home
none 125M 0 125M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sdb3 485M 8.1M 452M 2% /tmp
/dev/sda3 6.4G 5.2G 908M 86% /usr
/dev/sdb4 5.6G 720M 4.6G 14% /var
bash$

ed to add: paul.... got that chim back on the road yet?

Is 512Mb enough?

for a small install with no X then yes, but it'll be quite a small install. I'll echo pbrettle's questions about what you want it to do. If you want a full install with X, and some multimedia stuff, then NO, if all you want is a basic install to act as a router (for example), 512meg will be more than enough..... so.....

what do you want it to do?

ugh, that sentence is far to close to "where do you want to go today?"

It is possible to run linux from a single floppy, like the man already said, what do you want it to do?

512mb should be easily enough for a nice nix, like FreeBSD.

You coould get RH down to that too, if you just dont install all the shit that comes with it.

Like has been said, you can get floppy sized kernels.

Debian on my router using about 160 meg, without any attempt to "minimise" it, just only installing what's needed.

/usr/X11R6 on this box contains 180 meg.

You could squeeze by with half a gig but a whole gig would be easier. But why stint yourself? HDDs are cheap...
