Next body to step up to?

Currently had the 40D for just over a year now. Was just window (ebay) shopping and wondering what would the next best reasonable body to step up to be.
I'm not sure if I want to take the step up to FF just yet as i'm still learning and getting used to the lenses I have on a crop sensor, plus I would have to replace my UWA for a FF one.
7D, or perhaps a 5d Mk 1 if i was going to take the FF plunge :/

Well it's all a bit of everything at the moment as far as personal stuff is concerned.

However in the next little while I'm going to be going out with a couple of wedding photographers that I know as a third man just to get some more real world exposure and hopefully learn some hints/tips from some professionals.

I own a 7D and regulaly use a 40D.
40D is showing its age a bit thesedays, the LCD isnt that great and the button placement etc feels a bit old to me now but realy its still fine and the IQ is pretty good.
The 7D would give you more pixels/resolution, slightly better noise, better LCD, better viewfinder, better AF, flash comander, spirit level, video, quick menus and more customisation.
Its a nice upgrade but IMO not huge and money would be better spent on glass.
A 5D will get you a full frame goodness ( shallow DOF) and better IQ overall ( lower noise, better colour etc). You loose out on fps and autofocus and flash, lcd etc.
A 5D2 is a decent body still has rough AF and lower fps but superb IQ.

I'm on a 40d and love it, I was ready to move to a 60d (before it was released) as I wanted video, better af etc.
I'm having trouble justifying the jump to a 7d even though I really want the video, remote flash, better af, lower noise, better high iso performance etc...
I might have to buy better glass first and hope the 7d comes down in price a bit, mind you when will it be replaced?

If you are looking for someone to say that the 7d is a good camera, then it gets my vote. I have had it for three weeks now and it impresses me everytime I use it. The staggering thing for me is the lack of noise at high ISO's. It just takes it in it's stride. I guess that will be handy for the non flash permitting areas in wedding photography. Another thing that I have found useful is you can zoom in on the liveview image and fine tune the focus to get it pin sharp. The other thing is the staggeringly quick 8fps, it doesn't help if you want to keep your shutter count down tho!
I could go on and on but I upgraded from a 400d so the contrast between the two cameras is a lot larger than what you would find coming from a 40d.
I'd be upset if any pro came to do my wedding with a pair of xxxD bodies!
Ok the glass makes a lot of difference but croppers often cant produce clean enough or shallow enough DOF shots for some stuff, and they dont have things like dual card slots either.
All depends on style etc but it wouldnt make me happy , prehaps if there was a bag full of flahses and L primes along with them...

I have had a 40D since March 2008 and for the first 18 months I looked at alternatives every 6 month or so.
A year ago I nearly bought a 5D2 but then had a reality check - body and new (L) lenses (to replace my EF-S lenses) was about £2500. So I kept the 40D and I am glad I did.
I also almost bought a 7D and then had another reality check that it would not make that much difference. Who needs extra AF points when I 90% of the time use the centre one, who needs a bigger LCD screen when all I look at is the histogram, who needs a bigger pixel count when 90% of my pictures are printed at 10x6 or viewed on a computer, etc etc.
If you are desperate to buy something, I bought the following two lenses and have been extremely happy and I am glad I bought the glass rather than the body:
