With so many people taking this route I was just wondering what the main reason was...time and time and again I come up with the same answer desperation.

My point (and I'm prevented from naming and shaming) is ALL dealers give you less than your car is worth, thats just a fact.

You can get much more from a private buyer even with haggling and I know some of you have had a few time wasters, but we are talking thousands surly thats woth the few time wasters.

Why would anyone be desperate to sell a car?

Main reasons......
Too many Nobs!
Too many timewasters
too many e-mail pic collectors

The main reason is I don't like a load of Proll's turning up on my doorstep!!

Plus. I actually trust my mate who happens to sell TVR's! even though the last 2 cars I bought from him weren't TVR!

Car dealers buy and sell a product to make a profit. Do you begrudge anyone making a fair profit?

Not TVRs but I have sold several of our cars to dealers in recent years. The reason is very simple: Providing it's a proper dealer they don't mess about, they just pay for the car and take it. Selling big ticket cars privately can be an absolute nightmare because there are so many timewasters out there.

Personally, I would rather take a few thousand less and be rid of a car when I want rid of it than get top dollar and have to deal with multiple infuriating eejits who just want a test drive in a nice motor but lack the necessary funds to buy it.

When I was younger and poorer I valued my time less and would do whatever was necessary to wring the last tenner from a car. But back then the market was different for most cars and there seemed to be fewer timewaster about. Likewise summers were always sunny back then and Wagon Wheels were the size of a dinner plate.

I don't have a problem with anyone making a profit but I couldn't help but notice you used FAIR and PROFIT when refering to dealerssmile

All I'm trying to say is I fully understand there are time wasters, but you can cut down on the time wasting element surly the extra effort justifies a few thousand??

I've been doing some research online and its amazing how many ripoff stories appear as an argument used by dealers. Again I just think either money deposited in the bank or transfered into the bank and CLEARED FUNDS equals the keys is 5000% safe.

Looking at the very long list of Fernhursts latests offerings it seems the bottom line is hassle does have a price and its roughly about 4k

There's a bit of psychology involved too. Once you've decided to get rid of a car there is a desire to get the deed over and done with as soon as possible (severing the emotional links if you like). If that means selling to a dealer at a discount then so be it.

Then there is the situation where you believe you price a car fairly or even very low (even as low as the price a dealer would offer) and get no interest - because it is the wrong time of the year or the prospective buyers cannot get the finance etc

Blackpoolrocket - do you even own a TVR? These threads do seem a little tiresome.

Ha ha. I was just thinking along similar lines - how many more times can you start a thread asking the same question in a slightly different way?

Look at it this way: if all dealers make a lot of what you consider to be excess profit then there's a market for you to set up and undercut them all by simply making a fair profit.

Blackpoolrocket is in the same position as me, in as much as we are both looking for a TVR but are sick of seeing 'mint' cars that are basically heaps with people asking WAY over the top for them. Timewasting works both ways you know.
The best one lately was the outstanding Chim for sale which had the usual scratches and stonechips WTF confused
Anyway you are correct he does seem to bleat on about it and I've been sucked in, again, against my better judgement hehe

I don’t agree with slagging PH members off so i’m not going to but I would like to share some of my experiences so far as i’m new to TVR buying.

I’m in communication with a few sellers so for the same reason I hope I don’t offend.

Prices of some cars are completely mad, it’s Autumn you’re not going to sell it at that price mate I feel like saying.

I decided to steer away from dealers as well mainly because they are slimy gits biggrin, only joking, I can’t afford the prices they charge they are never prepared to knock decent amounts off and thats it really, I’ve nothing against them, I’d just rather go private.

TVR sellers where do I start. Positives are most I’ve spoken to are really sound, but I have had to adopt an email screening process. Why is it you send an email to someone about a motor and then the next thing you know they are ringing you up and they’ve turned into Alan Sugar, ‘so do you want it or what’ shoot (I nicked this of someone else but its right)

It can be worse than walking into a menswear shop.
Pushy sales people aside, why is every single car on here 'the best TVR you’ll ever see'. confused

Its really hard separating the obvious bangers from the good ones and when you consider travel it’s a nightmare.
Having said all of this I’d still rather go private because I prefer having money in my pocket. bounce

I wonder what the future for car dealers is with sites like PH, that poll that was done on another post seems to point to about 70% sales done through private

I've just got into Cerbera ownership, I previously had a sierra cosworth and selling it was an absolute nightmare,

TBH I don't mean any offence by this but the main problem when selling a car like that (and I'm pretty certain a TVR would be the same) is that there are a lot of people who expect 20 year old cars to be like new cars.

When I described my cossie as being excellent condition I was being accurate, it was excellent. However that didn't stop quite a few people phoning up and being put off by the fact it had had a respray, it was 24 years old and 4 years ago I decided it needed the paint freshing up but people were expecting it to be totally original and untouched (it was priced reasonably as well)

I wouldn't hessitate to take my TVR to a dealer to sell it because of people like this.

I put this down to these people being inexperienced in owning cars like that? They are used to getting in their new BMWs with nothing at all wrong and they expect to go and see a 14 year old Cerb and it be the same!

If I advertised my cerb now I would say it is in excellent condition, that doesn't stop it having stone chips though wink

Also buying from a dealer means that if you get it home put it up on ramps and discover its full of holes you have come back on it. Not that this is likely to happen because dealers ain't going to have cars on their forecourt that are going to damage their reputations are they? Especially not somewhere like Fernhurst, would they risk their reputation for only selling top end cars by putting a minger on the forecourt? Thats why you pay extra! peice of mind

What is your problem???? a guy has come on here, a relatively new member has already said that he's not into the mudslinging that goes on here, for whatever reason has not acknowledge your post and you have a pop. Thats just great.

if everyone acknowledged every single thing folk say on this forum the posts would be so long nobody would bother reading through them and the PH servers would be constantly crashing with overload as posts average 100 pages.

Anyway, lets stick to the point, reading his post I think he made some pretty good observations as a new buyer.

I suppose thats true but anyone with half a brain and has bought and sold a car before realises the score. I suspect comments like 'its a bit tatty are aimed at getting the seller to reduce the price.

True but I had an email from someone who was offering another TVR not chim which meant I wasn't interested, but his motiavation was he was disgusted by what a dealer already metioned was offering him. So and we were discussing selling, I have to say this would def put me off walking into a dealer for some open wallet surgery

Yes I agree with you Blackpoolrocket, dealers can offer silly money sometimes but ultimately if you put me on the spot now and said i had to sell my Cerb I would probably try a few dealers first and if they offered say, £10k for a car that I would advetise for £11.5k - 12k I would seriously consider it. Purely because after owning and eventually selling 18 cars in my lifetime I have absolutely had it with would be buyers that are either expecting the world for a reduced price or are so indisicive (how do you spell that?!) it becomes infuriating!

Fair enough
My only real point to this thread was to try and establish why people go to dealers given the huge gulf in prices.

It seems the common answer is time wasting buyers.

From a buyers point of view I’m not going to travel 150 miles to say ‘I thought it was blue’. I tend to ensure all the questions, concerns I have are addressed before I put my coat on. If anything worries me I don’t leave the house. I will always ensure both me and the seller know what I’m prepared to pay and if we don’t agree before hand, then nobody has wasted anything.

If I go see a car it’s to verify everything i’ve been told by email or telephone adds up, what the owner looks like and to ensure the car is worth being inspected.

Anyway, I think this thread has gone as far as it can go as all the answers seem to point to one thing ‘Tire Kickers’.

To get back to the original topic...... I have part ex'd down via a dealer in order to realise some cash and keep a TVR in the family.

To compare what a dealer charges to what a private buyer charges is not fair IMO. A buyer will expect to pay more from a dealer and so expects there to be a markup over what was paid for the car.

A more reasonable approach is to see the difference between what a car could reasonably be sold for if being sold privately against what that seller could get for said car by selling to a dealer instead

For me, I reckon there was around a £1500 differential against what I actually got compared to what I reckon I might have got if I had sold the car myself - this amount, taken with no hassle, no test-pilots, money in the bank plus the Chim of my choice was a magic deal - that's why I sold to a dealer.
