Hi i have just been given an old BUT brand new Canon EOS 300d, i have charged the battery and followed the hand book to the letter on start up but nothing happens when i press the ON button, i have just noticed that there is not a ce card inserted (does not come with one) will this stop the camera from coming on.....Thanks Gordon
Think it just takes a BP-511 battery - it been used in lots of Canon cameras until fairly recently.
Try a different battery to rule that out? Maybe at a local camera store...
Either that or buy a non-canon BP-511 equivalent for not much money (why a non-canon equivalent? Well the cost these days is slightly brow-furrowing)

There are tiny switches on the doors for the CF card and the battery. Either one of these being open will kill the camera.
I broke the battery door switch off on my 30D when cleaning it, but managed to glue the offending switch closed
That said, I'd try a new battery first.
I paid about £10 for 2 compatable ones on Ebay, they were absolutely fine.
