I've seen a few of these around and wanted to know what people thought of them.

What are the running costs like ?
Just how quick are they ?
Are the cabriolet ones worth looking at ?
What sort of price should you expect to pay for a good one ?

Any help much appreciated.

Paul, I have a mate who owned a 968 tip coupe and I had a cab tip for a year. Also taken a CS for a good blast a while ago.

They are very 'new' Porsche feeling, nice engine (although bit boring and lumpy for most 911 enthusiasts), but nothing too exciting. If you want cheap running costs, a posey car and average Porsche performance they are IMO the best car Porsche made (quite a bargain at the moment too in LHD or RHD!) I however sold mine as it provided none of the thril of a 911.

Mine was a lovely amathyst with raspberry interiored number which I'm sure Mr Domster will not be able to resist the challenge of commenting on

Very posey but boring to drive. Depends how much you get off on the looks as opposed to the driving really.

ppps: Forgot to mention the CS, go for it, they DO drive well and are great fun.

I nearly bought a 968 CS from a Pistonheader a while back. I am a fan but into 911s now after a 944 cab and turbo. Just a bit bland in comparison, but v good value. Handle amazingly well, though.

As for Scottster's amethyst cabrio 968 tiptronic with matching interior, down to the steering wheel horn buttons... well I'll let you draw your own opinion there ;-)

PS Did anyone notice that thing about 1.5 million MGFs having been sold? Didn't think there were that many hairdressers in the UK.

PPS Not that that has anything at all to do with Scottsters cabrio. Oh no, absolutely not.

my mum's got a peppermint 968 Cab, I've taken that for a thrash, not blisteringly quick but great fun, sounds nice and handles well.

Jeez if I had a quid for every time I'd heard that I'd have sold my MG and be driving a 993TT already!

Thanks for the info.

Sounds like it could be a contender. The running costs and insurance for a 911 are a little high for me (well not in principle, but just on my current salary !).

Are the triptronic models better than the manuals?

There's a nice looking K reg triptronic cabriolet in the Autotrader this week for £13,995 with 64k on the clock - I will check it out at the weekend !

Any more info / opinions ???

All front engined Porsches have galvanised bodies since the 944 I think...

You're right Thom, but only since about 1985. Early 944s weren't galvanised.

Look for one fitted with the M030 option, that's the sport chassis, and just for the sake of it the Recaro bucket seats
The option list is on a sticker at the back, between the two rear light clusters

On a 968CS, look out for a groaning power steering pump, signs of crash damage, vibration from the engine or box, and check that the belts have been done.

Tiptronic is not a good option in 968s as a whole 'cos the six speed box is really good, and the Tippytoes sounds a bit like a hairdryer on kickdown. Also, the 968s are not v quick with Tiptronic (7 seconds 0-60 or something daft), so unless you spend a lot of time in traffic, ie London commuting, go manual.

Mr Tony - it's high time you cashed in all those jibes and got yourself a Porker. You've been window shopping almost as long as me ;-)

Thom - Recaro buckets were standard. You could delete them as an option if you wanted, although sod knows why.

Domster,
I know Bucket seats were standards, but exploration of continental classifieds has shown most customers went for the standard seats. Hopefully it's not the case in the UK
