Kept my licence..... just! Road Angel??

Got caught in my grandad Volvo T5 a couple of months back doing 106mph on a motorway.

In scotland, M74, dry conditions, good visibility, traffic light. Caught using a Handheld radar gun from within a marked T5 estate.

6 points and a £600 fine. Having already got 3 live points, I now have 9 live points. 12 months to wait until I go back down to 6 points.

Does anyone use, own or has owned a road angel?

Would appreciate any thoughts and comments please.

You need a jammer something like a laser park pro. By the time road angels etc react to laser guns it's too late they have you.

I've got a Snooper Lynx. It doesn't jam anything, but appears to be very good with "Risk zones" and the previous one I had was similarly good in unfamiliar areas.

Gatso's etc, works a treat.

I bought my first Snooper in 1999 when I got sick of being done, all on motorways. At the time I hadn't had a cleam licence in 10 years, I've never been done since and see thm a valid investment, due to insurance savings, as well as the numeorus times they've saved me.

Btw, I'm not a serial speeder in built up areas, I've had around 30 points in my driving career, all of which were for motorway speeding.

It's GPS, so not as good as the ones that picked up the laser / radar scatter so you knew whether a scamera was working.

Laser detection doesn't help ayway, as they've got you the moment it activates.

With this there is an airtime contract which means it's constantly updated and if someone sees a mobile trap and uploads it, then it's in your system inside a few seconds. The police seem to favour certain lay-bys so it's a useful feature to keep you on your toes.

I don't envy you with 9 points, I had 6 months of driving everywhere at exactly the speed limit and it drove me mad.

I used to use a radar detector, but like sat navs and other devices I find it distracted me from the process of driving. So I just use eyeball 101 now. Sounds like you were unlucky, and you'd probably have been pinged before being alerted by most devices anyway.

a bit of a thread hijack. Just curious if you have 9 points and then get caught again and presumably a ban...what's the typical length of a ban? presuming the speed you get caught is not excessive and there is no dangerous driving or anything stupid.

I use a road angel "Connected" which I think is great. It updates itself via the orange mobile phone network every couple of minutes. It does get a little frustrating when it alerts to mobile cameras that have been there at some point in the past, just not always at the same time as you.
The average speed camera detector is most useful.
I dont have the laser detector, but as has been said before they are normally activated too late to be of any use. Also no laser jammer option, however, this would be sailing very close to the wind if used to avoid a fine or points
Battery life is about 6 hours, so IMHO I would say yes a great bit of kit.

The ONLY way to be sure of not getting caught is to drive at the speed limit, It is a real ball ache but believe me if you want to keep your licence and reduce the stress while in the car Stick to the limit or very slightly above (70-77. Do this until you lose some points IT's the only way I'm afraid, IF you rely on the gizzmos you'll be back on here shortly with a sob story.

I agree with George but I do find that my Road Angel (also the Road Angel Connected now)helps me pay attention to my speed. I've had no points in the 7+ years of Road Angel use but got zapped by hidden cameras/ stopped by the BiBs during the previous 3 or so years. Could be coincidence but given the proliferation of cameras over the years I'm confident the Road Angel has probably kept my licence in tact and in my possession.

This happened to a friend ,he received a 6 month ban and fine, I think 3-6 months is about the length you are looking at!! I guess its down to the judge on the day!.

I use a road angel pro, i tend to drive up to aberdeen and home to france (SW) a lot so it keeps me in check when it tells me where cameras and blackspots are, but I dont reply on it

we all speed at times and we all get caught sometimes, either stick to speed limit, or take chance? I think majority of people tend to speed on dual carrigeways and motorways

If we stick to the speed limits when there below 50 as you shoudlnt want to go too quick on roads for 20,30,40mph will you? as usually set at these speed limits for a reason

Ive been caught before I ever had the road angel thing and went to 12points but didnt get banned luckily, but was my fault so no excuse, though on one occassion i was in middle of bunch of cars and was singled out, and one other time followed for miles by a tailgater, so have had my scrapes

the road angel pro helps for unsure roads as it pinpoints hazards and warns you even if you are under the speed limit

suppose they have there plus points but not everyone likes them

I've just bought the 3zero from snooper. This is the replacement for the. Lynx and again is based on updated gps but also has radar detector and laser detector also. However laser detector is unlikely to pick up any scatter so will be too late.
Good for when you are in unknown area etc

Got three points around five years ago, bought a road angel on offer at a car show. I've had three performance cars since and not picked up any points. Licence is clean now. Would definitely recommend them, or an up to date tom tom has all the fixed camera positions. The mobile camera / laser detectors are rubbish though, as they are set off by all the time by, presumably, other similar signals. Had one and had to turn it off because it became so irritating.
