The strange case of the exploding Manfrotto 390rc2 head

Happened last night about 1AM was viewing the moon (whilst colleague was videoing the moon for stacking in RegiStax) felt the 100X25 bins go slack in alt despite trying to stabilise using pan handle the mount then literally fell to pieces and I was lucky to actually have a hand on them and was able to stop any damage from occurring.

Anyone else heard of this? the head was as new and had about 1 hours use since fitting (head actually bought and stored unused for 3 years prior).

Kinda lost confidence here, you know, I have the "old" head to fit but looking for some info first naturally.

It was pretty cold last night 'bout 3C and it had long cold soak, tolerances?????
