Apparently the list is out of date.

So doesn't matter.

In answer though, none.

I actually don't mind paying for this one, seeing as it exists to promote British-made products. It's almost all the others that are a waste of space.

English Heritage and the Forestry Commission both serve a purpose. Perhaps their jobs could be done better by Government departments, of course...

Eng Heritage, was set up in 1983, preumably because it was believed it could look after historic sites better and more efficiently than unqualified civil servants in govt depts and separate from interference by govt ministers. Mrs T setting up something to do the same job and costing more? Hmmm....

Forestry Commission has been around since 1919. Don't know, but I guesss any organisation can seve money if pressed but is binning it the cheapest way?

If the govt still wants their current responsibilities fulfilled you have to ask whether putting it back into a gov dept, including the transitional costs, is the most efficient way of doing it.

"According to the Tax Payers Alliance, tax payers funded 1,162 Quangos at a cost of nearly £64bn; equivalent to £2,550 per household. Since the coalition government of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats was formed in May 2010, over 80 of the public bodies funded by government, often known as "quangos" have been abolished under the conservative plans to reduce the size of the public sector, as a route to reducing the overall budget deficit.

A recent document from the coalition government suggests that another 177 public bodies could also face abolition As of July 2010, the focus has been on bodies that facilitate arts, health, business, education, policing and the environment."

Cable mentioned last night that people get pensions from these things, and they are very lucrative.

i appreciate that bringing a degree of rational thought to this thread will be frowned upon but given that we dont how many people are involved or how often they meet it seems pretty knee-jerk to just say "scrap them all"....

just a few at random that i think are quite possibly useful things to have...

Air Quality Expert Group
British Shipbuilders
Farm Animal Welfare Council

of course, there is duplication, some quite obviously could be scrapped and savings can be made no doubt but they were set up for a reason and if those reasons are no longer valid then i am supporting the review and cessation of activities, i only hope that its not a case of "we dont understand what they do, ooh it looks complicated and we cant be bothered to find out.....but they cost how much?....right they''ve gone!"....

Some of the ones being kept don't seem to make much sense - British Railways Board (Residuary) for example - surely whatever they do could be pushed off onto Network Rail?

I see BNFL is being scrapped - better hope no-one loses a fuel rod when they're closing it down!

Churches Conservation Trust?

Surely that doesn't mean taxpayers funding homes for imaginary friends, does it?

Sticks.

Jobs for the boys (and girls) - so get rid of most of them and I don't think the UK will exactly suffer....

I have an idea. Let give them all 6 months paid leave. Any which are missed will find their jobs waiting for them when they come back, the rest are gone.

What is unclear is if the function is simply being moved elsewhere in government or if it is being cut.

If you have one mega-quango that does the same functions of the 177 savings might not be that great.

Indeed!

Surely one jsut delegates the task to your butler, who delegates it to the sommelier.

No need for a committee to be involved. That's the problem with having a house of Commons, no breeding you see?
