I think this will go down as a great speach. I have to say what Britain needs is more companies like the John Lewis Partnership.

So you are saying that it is bad idea for a company to be owned by its employees and succeed

Much better the dyson model where once the company gets rich enough it fks off to a cheaper labour market and stuff the workers

John Lewis sells foreign made products.

Dyson produces said foreign made products.

The UK should focus on higher skilled manufacturing, IT, finance, and global consultancy type businesses - we can't be a major playor in saturated markets, so we need to become players in niche markets.

What we do need to do is stop selling off key businesses/assets to foreign owners (EDF is an obvious one).

Fair point

Capitalism might seem morally objectionable at times but it is the only system that works.

In the real world of the marketplace a company needs to be competitive, workers need to be competitive. Whatever the situation is for both, they reap the rewards they deserve.

Dyson had plans to build a new factory across the road from their current location. The council wanted more houses instead and refused them permission. Malmesbury still has the R&D side but the rest has gone.

Trouble is we have the likes of Peter Jones on the Dragons' Den telling people off for making things in the UK and preaching to everyone that it is cheaper to manufacturer goods in China.

Vince Cable could turn the tide of greed.

One reason why our next is NOT a Dyson, as I remember a prog about Dyson and him saying there was NO WAY he was leaving GB with production as he was honour bound as a Brit to stay British.... Lucre before honour again... almost like politicians...

Didn't that nobber Dyson cite the reason he moved production abroad was because the UK wasn't in the Euro? So he upped sticks to Asia! confused

Dysons mistake was to make a promise that made no sense to his business case. Stay in the UK and fail or move abroad and succeed

If he'd been allowed to build the new factory they wouldn't have moved. I think he'd had enough of being messed around by the idiots in charge round here. Not sure about the Euro issue but I can imagine Malaysia is cheaper to produce goods.

Of course its going to be cheaper to produce stuff in Malaysia. But there must be a market for people who want to buy British made goods.

I, for one, am absolutely sick of seeing 'made in China/Vietnam/Indonesia etc etc' on goods.

Somethings got to change, and yes, I wouldn't mind paying extra for UK made goods. smile

A lot of people claim this, but in reality it isn't true.

Fine.

But I would gladly pay for British made jeans(can't find any!)/shirts/t-shirts(can't find any!)/trainers(New Balance or Wilsons) and shoes(plenty), as well as white goods (my 'fridge, oven and dishwasher are all UK made).

I'm sorry, but I had just had enough of all my hard earned going abroad, so now I try to buy British as much as possible.

Now, can anyone recommend any British made jeans? smile

Why? So our lazy, useless workforce with their 'couldn't care less about the customers' attitude can throw stuff together just as badly as they do in India / China, but charge us twice as much for it?

I don't mind buying cheap crap, but I loathe buying expensive crap, (ie, Made in Great Britain).
So, selling the TVR are we?
