Chris Huhne suggests a £15bn increase in environmental taxation to help those lowest earners in society avoid income tax, equivalent to approx £800 extra tax for every taxpayer.

the Telegraph online said:
At present, most of the money from green taxes – around £26 billion – comes through fuel duty. Drivers would be forced to pay an extra 30p for a litre of petrol if all the extra revenue were raised that way. Taxes on plane tickets, which currently bring in about £1 billion a year, could also go up, sources close to Mr Huhne said.

The Energy Secretary, who addresses the Liberal Democrat conference tomorrow, told delegates today that he had not yet determined where extra green taxes would fall, and asked them for ideas. But insiders confirmed that, realistically, such a large increase would come largely from carbon duty – meaning more pain for motorists and holidaymakers.

The "ambitious" proposals will be put to the Treasury ahead of the budget next spring, although privately Mr Huhne anticipates a battle, not least with the Chancellor, George Osborne. Mr Huhne will argue that drivers will accept a rise if persuaded that the money will be used for tax breaks elsewhere, including a possible cut in employers' national insurance payments.
An extra 30p per litre in tax? Nah, not a chance fella... go find other mug to pull the wool over their eyes...

Is it too soon to ask for another election?

Using it to save the Planet are they?

I'm the wrong side of 40 and have voted in every election since I was eligible. I really don't see anybody who would get my vote now. It was great to see the back of Winky, but this kind of nonsense proves they are all EXACTLY the same. Working people get shafted at every single turn.

Unfortunately that's because we are most likely to pay it. We are the conformists, so do what we are told.

The thing which annoys me is they talk about "the motorists" like we're a small part of the British population. How many drivers in the UK? Something like 38 million, isn't it?

Fine.

I'd guess that the middle classes, generally speaking prefer cotton/wools/other natural weaves as a material.

The lower orders favouring polyester, rayon, nylon etc.

You want to help the environment, tax imports of garments made from man made materials.

Sounds like another lib-dem 'policy', that reminds me of why they spent so long not in power.

Now they are at least allowed to sit in the ante-rooms of those who do hold power, yet they still come up with ideas like this. It is patently obvious that such taxes are nothing at all to do with being 'Green', and those who pay them will simply be being shafted once again. But this doesn't seem to stop them - alas.

Shame. I always regardedd LibDems as being intelligent, but mis-guided. Reports like this make me think they are something less than intelligent, and distinctly duplicious.

I think we should dream up a special tax for deceitful MP's who shag a plug-ugly mistress without telling their wife of 26 years and five kids.

Nope, Nu Labia style Social Engineering.

If they want to tax the 'well off' to reduce the tax burden on teh low incomes then do it via fecking Income Tax and be honest about it.

Starting to realise what a dangerous thing this coalition is - would have been better for Labour to have got back in than this ruin of conservative principles we have now.

Dave said over and over "vote blue get green"

You think Dave is doing this against his will just to keep the coalition alive?

They are all for it.

Steady on there!

What's not working in it is the mix of ideologies.

You can't have a hack em slash em, tax em and burn em outlook.

You either have to pin your flag to one mast or the other, slash the costs, cut the tax free the economy or prop up the economy and risk the rich leaving as a result of the additional tax burden.

It's like the left arm doesn't know or care what the right arm is doing just as long as its being recognised that it's a left arm with valid input.

I can't see a viable alternative to the current shower, and what's more, I can't see any let up in pushing the green agenda down everyone's throats.

If Plotters is right in that a mix of strategy can't and won't work, what's the answer? The current administration has, quite subtly IMO, let its green zealousness subside over the last couple of months, to the point at which the general population has been threatened with cut after cut after cut, only now to be propositioned with the 'white (or should that be green?) knight' of eco-friendliness as a potential mainstay of tax revenue gains.

Politicians today, collectively make up the biggest bunch of ars*cherries this country has ever seen.

Thing is, I voted Blair into power back in the '90s. (Sorry!) Back then Tories were a bunch of lying self-serving stes and it was scandal after scandal. In the last 15 years, Labour proved that they're no better. At least with the Tories, you know they're not to be trusted.

He doesn't set the budget.

Is it too much to ask to actually wait for these stories to be confirmed before launching into rants?

good point.

But it could be one of those stories where they say £800 to scare us then it turns out its only £500 and we are supposed to be happy because it could have been worse.

lets face it we are going to be rogered silly in the budget frown

Plus this tax would hit the poorest drivers the hardest. Rich people will still drive around like Mr Toad.

There are two main ways to get out of the debt problem - cutting spending and raising taxes. I'm pretty sure raising taxes is least popular across the board. If the Liberals keep coming up with these kinds of ideas I can see it backfiring on them come the next election if the Conservatives don't mention or publicise tax raises.
