Around my part of north London I regularly see a dark blue Audi A3Tdi with the registration plate "A3". Now given that it appears to be a pretty standard spec (no S-Line or anything) I'd imagine that the car is probably worth £25k? I could say for sure what "A3" is worth but it must be well into 6 figures, maybe even £500k?

There are plenty of photos around or Veyrons, Ferraris, Zonda etc sporting obscenely expensive plates but I can't remember ever see such a mismatch in values.

Has anyone else spotted seemingly expensive plates on otherwise unexcepional cars?

Back in the day these plates could be had for £5 e.g. "O1" or were original issue.

Often they are passed down in family.

Yeah I offen think it's a waste of a good plate but maybe passed down the family or maybe a wealthy person with an A3 thinking why not have a plate on it...

I once saw a seriously knackered old flat-bed van with the registration 'E55O'
I would imagine that ExonMobil would be happy to buy that one for a few pounds!

As is a lot of discussion about how some people have great plates on duff cars!

My brother's number plate is now worth more than his car!

Plate is 2 numbers, 2 letters - bought at auction for about £5K incl auction premium/transfer, etc., on a very low mileage & immaculate 2001 Jeep Gran Cherokee Ltd 4.0

try AUD 1

on an A5, saw it on a low loader a few months ago looking like it was on way to a delivery, normally i'd think Audi would own it but never seen it on a press car or anything in magazines etc

The number plate on my father's car is worth at least five times as much as the car itself. Maybe ten times.

It's owned by an Audi dealer who I think are Manchester based.

While I'm generally ambivalent to the whole personalised plate thing, I do believe there is a certain amount of class inherent in having a £100k numberplate on a weatherbeaten Mk2 Golf Driver.

(Ideally with the original Volkswagen dealership stickers in the window, parked on a side street over Mayfair sort of way, but that's probably getting a bit too far into the realm of ridiculous stereotype.)

I once saw i think W1 on a very old beaten up Rover in Ashford Kent. (about 10 years ago)

Even at the time (to young to drive etc) thought wow, that plate must be worth more than the car.

I saw 'U3' on a RAV4 near Leeds Yesterday. Got to be worth 10 times the car at least.

Apparently A1 is on a mini cooper S, and ABC 123 is on a Ford fista freestyle. Crazy!
