It would seem that the top earning person in the NHS is a fking GP, on 475.000 a year. Out of the top 10 in the NHS 7 are GP's. This is fking ridiculous. How the fk can a GP earn nigh on half a million a year.

1. Take these antibiotics for two weeks
2. Take some aspirin and rest it
3. I've no idea what's wrong so I'm referring you
4. Repeat 1-3 above ad infinitum

Or google it in front of the patient.

OP that money will be probably because he's running a surgery, I would imagine, so out of that will come staff costs etc. Whilst they do earn an awful lot of money, the figures that get put in the press are somewhat skewed.

... when at the top of their game, and they work for it (and if they don't, they're out).

So fking what ?

They have had a minimum of 10 years training and these ones might be a partner and own part of their surgery.

Well it is if its from taxpayers money. It is noticeable that a high proportion of those earning 'excessive' salaries in the public sector work in the NHS.

You can always compare it to those who work in the city (in a variety of professional capacities) but the vast majority of public sector employees, GPs or otherwise, do not work in central london.

Those on the same level as a GP in a provincial town would be such people as partners in law or accountancy firms etc. Do you think they earn more than the prime minister?.

Good for them

Also, this doesn't mean he pockets £475k/pa does it? He has to run a surgery out of that, which may be a large surgery with many overheads..

Why is that remotely relevant to any discussion about pay?

Given that it seems many public sector employees earn so much, is it not unreasonable to suggest that the PM is woefully underpaid by comparison?

Shhh! Stop talking sense.

All we know is this GP earns £475k and we should be angry about it! The BBC said so! yes

I'd have hoped that all manner of people earn more than the Prime Minister.

As Politics shouldn't be a career choice.

The market for British trained health professionals is global.

We either pay to hang on to them (and one would imagine that the top earner is Director of a Surgery Group or similar) or we lose them, in the main, to the US where the pay is rather higher than it is here.

It's a ludicrous amount of money for someone in the NHS to be paid

I wonder if it's this fella.

http://www.brightonandhovenews.org/2010/09/nhs-pay...

Who, through thinking and being sensible, has saved the NHS upto £6m a year.

£475K still seem like a lot?

I feel this is like saying the owner-director of a small business turning over £475k pa "earns" that much ! In reality we have no idea of knowing how much profit the business makes, or how much the director takes from that, and how much tax they pay...

Given that he would most likely have been on under £100k five years ago, yes.

Presumably the change in contracts etc have incentivised him to make these savings and thus earn more money.

I wonder if that would have happened under the old system.
