SPD's - Edumacate me!

New to all this, so forgive my ignorance.
Recently got a Specialized Sirrus Sport, which came with toe-clips. These were OK on the first biggish ride I did (40-odd miles) but I think I'd rather have clipless but I'm not sure what to order.
I'll only use the bike on the road, so would I be better off with something like these Shimano M540's or these Shimano R540's
I presume that each uses a different type of cleat?
And will I be restricted in which type of shoe I can buy if I choose one over the other?
Any help appreciated.

If you commute, I would seriously recommend M520s - seem fine to me. They are MUCH easier to clip into than pure road pedals, hence you won't hold people up while you slowly coast along hoping you are stepping on the right side of the pedal which you aren't.

They do use a different cleat but they are supplied with the pedal and will last for a long while.
You will have a slightly different choice of shoe since the MTB shoes tend to be compatible with MTB cleats and same with road. MTB shoes will let you walk around a little though.

Not so much of a commute, more a 'just go out for a ride' type of thing. I had spotted those already but wondered if they would be a bit rubbish for the money? Perhaps not though.walm said:

This also appeals to me So, maybe the 520's along with some MTB shoes would do the trick by the sounds of things.
Although, having said that, there are only a couple of hours left on this and the Sidi's look as though they retail at north of £100. Get them and the SPD's for under £75 and it would be a bargain I reckon??

You saved me typing exactly the same thing. M520s are a no brainer.That said, on my proper roadie I did make the jump to road SPDs, and they are much more positive, support your foot more, and give me more range before I get sore feet. That said, much harder to get in and out of.

Had the R540's on my road bike for a while and did like them but as has been said, found the single sided design a pain when commuting. If you're trying to set off, on an incline, in traffic trying to get going and get clipped in is a royal PITA.
Decided I was finally ready for clipless on my fixie and had been bought a set of the M520's at christmas so got them on and have really enjoyed them so far. Much better for commute purposes, more float which I've found more comfortable, and they don't seem to let go when you really pile on the effort on both down and upstroke of the pedals.
For £20, they're a bargain.
