Sat in the lounge last night having dinner, patio doors as it's a lovely evening, several loads of washing on the line.

I then get a whiff. Look out the window to see the garden is engulfed in smoke. Rush around to close the windows, and door. Too late to save the washing, but bring it all in anyway. I go to investigate the cause, and a guy about 1/4 mile away has the biggest bonfire I've seen, other than on Guy Fawkes night. What a selfish wker! there was smoke all over our end of the village as there was no wind to speak of.

Woke up this morning, and the cars are all covered in ash too. mad

Why so people do it. Ah yes - too tight to hire a skip!

I suspect that "the above" refers to my post which I had deleted because I felt it was a little too harsh. On reflection, I think it wasn't actually that bad. So, I'll say it again:

So, you'd prefer send it all to landfill rather than burn it? It's a bit of smoke FFS, get a grip.

it's recycling and better than the skip taking it to landfill.

There's nothing illegal about it. Just a PITA, and a little inconsiderate on a beautiful Sunday evening.

I love a good bonfire, not sure why, maybe it's the hidden pyromaniac in me witing to get out.

Luckily I don't have any neighbours to ps off and in the country, bonfires seem to be fairly standard still, well round here anyway.

I do hire a skip when I have a real clear out and I take stuff to ther tip as well, but occasionally there is the need for a bonfire!

Yep. No problem with bonfires if there's no one around to annoy. Personally I wouldn't want to piss 100+ villagers off by having a monster bonfire. But I guess some people don't car that much.

What's wrong with ACTUALLY recycling it as opposed to burning it?

So when should they have a bonfire then?

If it's large branches, then I'm sure there's plenty of old folk who'd appreciate free heating materials (once they've dried out). If it's small, then we have green bins to take that waste away. Sure it may take a few bin-fulls, but that's what we've done in the past.

Guess I'm more considerate than others. For that I apologise.

Perfectly acceptable to have a bonfire at the weekend.

Bonfires are a natural way to recycle (nature managed to recyle everything perfectly well for millions of years without using 27 different small plastic bins!). The CO2 goes back into the air and the ash goes back into the ground.

That said, only burn paper, wood and plant matter, not plastic as you'll get toxic fumes.

Woodsmoke and freshly-cut grass are two of the greatest smells smile
