BAD RADIO/AERIAL RECEPTION

hi all
not that i will use the radio much i just want it to pick up stations !!!
at the moment the radio cant pick up any stations at all
i haven't checked as yet that the aerial is connected to the rear of the radio but will assume that it is for now
on looking at the aerial from inside the boot i can see a small wire hanging with a nut and bolt on it
which i think was connected to some wire mesh, i dont know what that is for ? but the mesh looks like its breaking down/falling apart and will need replacing
is this a earthing system ?
has anyone had any problems with aerial reception and guide me on to sorting it out

I had problems with mine as the electric earial failed. When I attached a new earial it was still no good as there was a break somewhere in the coaxial cable. My current (temporary) earial is a length of ordinary wire laid under the centre console. Works fine so I hav'nt bothered fixing the proper one.
