My OH thought she saw a moth in the hallway earlier, thought nothing of it as we'd had the kitchen window open earlier

Fast forward to 10 mins ago and out of nowhere a bat starts circling the living room

I did what any decent man would do, I st myself and legged it to the kitchen (moths are my biggest phobia and this was like a giant moth)

My OH said she was impressed with it's sonar as it flew very close to stuff without hitting it or us, it seemed to be looking for somewhere to hang

I opened the front door and I think it must've gone out there, I swear it went into the bathroom which is adjacent to the front door but my OH has searched the bathroom and has declared it safe

fk knows how it got in as the windows are sash and only open about an inch from the bottom

Any tips on how to deal with it if it comes back, I think they are protected so I can't splat it, can they be caught or enticed out with food?

Pair of gloves and pop it back outside, if you get the chance. Other than potential rabies, they're harmless.

I wonder if we could use the bat in your flat to catch the frog in my bog?

They're harmless... if it's still in the flat, chance are it'll be clinging onto some curtains somewhere, so just get a clean tupperware tub you've probably got knocking around from the chinese and scoop it up in that.

It may well be an offense to harm it too, but best just help it out the flat and let it eat the flies & gnats that piss you off...

This - apparently the incidence of rabies in bats in the UK is still very rare, but if you do get bitten, get a vaccination.
If you do that straight away you'll be fine.
If you wait till symptoms appear you're stuffed.

It's definitely Dracula, just scoping before he returns tonight to drink your blood.

Enjoy your last night on Planet Earth, tomorrow you will be dust.

Bat's can actually see perfectly well - they just use Sonar because it's more effective.

Release a cat into your flat to deal with the bat. He'll probably catch it then put it on the mat.

I wouldn't imagine it will grab you by the throat, but I wouldn't handle one!

Only one person has ever survived rabies without the vaccination: http://site.jeannagiese.com/Home_Page.html

Depending what type of bat it is they are pretty tiny with their wings tucked in so it could easily be hidden away in a corner or behind a cupboard etc and you wouldn't find it.

If you do find it's still about and struggle to catch it then call the RSPCA or your local wildlife trust or bat group and someone may be able to come out and get it for you (they'll have nets and gloves and things to make it easy).

Rabies is ridiculously unlikely and you probably won't get bitten anyway, but chuck some gardening gloves on anyway. smile
