Ok, here's the deal. I'm (further) modding the airbox on my TLR and now have a choice to stick with the standard(ish) flat panel filter element that effectively bisects the box horizontally with intakes sharing the void below (except it's now foam media rather than paper) or run individual foam 'pod' filters over each bellmouth (which would be better in terms of simplicity and longevity as it kills filter elements). The total surface area doesn't differ greatly between the two methods BUT I have doubts whether the pod option will flow as well given the uneven intake pulses of a v-twin mean each cylinder will have the benefit of the full panel in turn whereas, with the pods, each cylinder will only flow to the maximum capacity of the dedicated filter serving it.

Id keep the panel filter due to the tuned volume of the airbox aiding cylinder filling.
But thats just me.

...assuming, of course, that it IS a tuned volume and not just a handy size of box that they could squeeze into the frame tubes...

IIRC my bro had to chop some extra inlet 'ports' into his Bandit airbox to get extra flow, suggesting that the standard bits do have limits...

Filter "socks"/"pods" are bit cack. They have nothing to provide any structure and tend to collapse when the bellmouth it is covering is sucking lots of air. This makes them a bit restrictive to the air flow into the bellmouth, which is like it is for a reason.
I'd go for the panel (as has been said assuming the airbox is of a designed volume) or a "pod" with some sort of internal structure to prevent them collapsing (as is done with a foam "sausage" filter).
