Just got the quote for a new focussing motor on my Canon 17-85mm IS USM lens. Ouch - and I'd hoped to save some money this month.

Still, I've taken something like 19,000 photos with my 350D, the vast majority with that lens, so I'm not unhappy. I'll just have to put off the 10mm lens for a while.

Has anyone got any recommendations on a lens hire place so I can get some photos of our house?

In terms of a repair (if you want to go that route), try Canon Elstree. They have fixed priced repairs, regardless of whatever the fault is.

A friend of mine had a 17-55 2.8 IS with a faulty IS unit repaired for £109.

I bought a 17-85 through Talkphotography for £180, if it is anywhere near that it might be better making a paperweight out of it (or selling it on fleabay as broken) and having a fresh one

How much is the repair?.

MPB Photographic have a few 17-85s for around the £200 mark. All with 6 month's guarantee smile

It's £160 all in - including a new diaphragm. Given that the lens has given good service, I'd rather have it back than get another second hand lens of dubious background, but it's pretty marginal. I sent it to Fixation who seem to have a good rep.
