Sorry, "Rover 100"

I always thought there crap, and actually they are

But it had a 1.1 and I swear I have never driven such a fast little car. Are all K-series engines the same? Obviusly there is no torque but on a level bit of A-road the thing flies for what it is, however Brakes are non existent, front is so low compared to the back and the steering wheel is 3 inches to the left.

I really want to have a go in a GTI now

A couple of friends had Metros. They had by far the most comfortable suspension of any small car I've ever sat in.

I had the 1.4 and it was actually great fun, just a go-kart with a big engine, but hopeless if you had to carry passengers because weight killed it. The K-series lumps were actually very good, when they weren't blowing up. Brakes used to scare me though.

I used a Metro 1.3 Kensington through winter... it was unstoppable! The only time it got stopped was when the snow under it lifted the wheels off the deck.

Even when the K series did it's party trick and turned into a large kettle it kept going.

I had one for a day and a half once.

Top tip - never let a friend who hasn't driven for three years drive your car, he may kill it......

Uh oh...K series eating HG's in

3...
2...
1...

I love the fact that there are still metros about - how much more environmentally friendly are they than the new super mini's etc. Been round for years, small capacity engines and light weight.

Now give me the Talon converstion and I'll have one...

I drove a Metro Gta many many years ago.

Not a bad car in its time.

I had an MG Metro (in black) and a 1.3 Metro (white). The pair cost me less than £40 to buy. Superb little cars (comparatively) , the white one had a lovely brown interior and was a real hoot to drive. The MG, not so great. Sadly. I sold the MG Metro for a decent profit and ran the white Metro for about 10 months until it died a very distinguished death.

GTi was an awesome little car, I had one for a bit, until I rolled it into a farmers field (I was 14, driving off road)

Would love to have one now....

I really liked the K Series in my Elise. It suited the car really well.

Just don't crash. I was once sitting in the back of one that got rear-ended - and I'm not sure how I still have legs, because when I looked at the space where my legs were the back seat was touching the front one!

There was a company who would strip a Metro back to bare bones and install quality suspension/brakes as well as the 160 VVC lump. Can't remember their name. Think they were about £6k, quite a q-car and I bet a hoot at most speeds, not to mention rather quick.

Metros are quite underrated IMO. I think people forget that for the time when they were launched there was nothing quite like it, practical, comfy, economical, spacious. Even the little 1.3 was never slow.

And let us never forget the 6R4.

My folks had a 414Si - went like something possessed. Same 1.4 105hp should be a titter in a Metro.

I had a white D reg MG Metro back in 1991 ish. It was a bit of fun to drive, but it rusted badly, smashed a gearbox, kept dropping all its oil (gear linkage seal) and was a bd to start on cold damp mornings.

Just ran the figures using letstorquebhp and assuming 185bhp and 855kg (which was the weight of a 1.4 metro), it gives...

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 185
Weight without Driver (KG) : 855
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 219.85
0 - 60 (Secs) : 5.39
0 - 100 (Secs) : 13.53
60 - 100 (Secs) : 8.13
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.81
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 101.03
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 13.61
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 102.88

Seems Reyland also did/do a conversion. Mmm, nice.

I have an old 1.1 Metro C (Why is it called a 1.1 if it's 1198cc?). It's really rather fun when it's running properly, though at the moment it's having problems at idle, and I'm not home with tools until Monday.

Virtually worthless, too, so no worries about it being damaged. As soon as I have something else that can take over daily driving duties I'm going to start dismantling it and replacing bits - make it into a track car to teach myself about engines and stuff.
