If you've just changed the dizzy cap try changing back to old one - may be you got a cracked one from the shelf. Also I (and the dealer who I bought the car off) chased a very similar problem for ages on my son in laws Rover 216, gave up in the end took it back to dealer and got money back (reputable one - but I did know him through a friend) eventually he tracked it down and it was an intermittent breakdown of the earth cable from the battery to chassis, new earth cable and car never gave the next owner any trouble at all.
Well work a check of your earth straps

Look at the connections on the petrol pump. Check they are nice and clean and are a tight fit. Next time it cuts out, dont try and start it straight away, just turn the ignition on and see if you can here the pump prime. Having recently had a bodyoff, i would doulble check all the earth points, hope that helps, Tom.
Hi Tinks
It sounds very similar to my intermittent fault suffered on the SCH trip this year which turned out to be a 5 pin connector in the nest of wires under the dash, mine was loose enough to become a problem for the supply to the engine run sensor. each time the connector was handled the engine cut out, I made better connections and the problem was solved. I think the technical term for the diagnostice procedure is the "waggle" test (per the Star Tester manual).
its worth taking a look

Its all guesswork Tinks - but there's an impact sensor (that cuts the fuel pump if you have a crash) just behind the front passenger side wheel - check the connections on that.
Check the ECU connector - you have had it on and off once or twice haven't you?
Fuel pump relay is another possibility.
Ignition module on the side of the distributor can play up - particularly when hot - check the connections to the distributor module aswell as they may have been disturbed when the timing was done.

Afternoon,
Seem to remember having an issue with cabling, battery to engine compartment. Check rear off-side wheel arch for HR temporary repair - crazy route to run the cable, had to repair it twice in my ownership but never got around to replacing - changed the windscreen then to (delaminating).
Glad to see the old girl is in safe hands.

I have a similar problem. with mine Its not the engine cuts that cuts out, its the whole of the electrics. She normally runs fine, switch off then at random times you go to start her and nothing! no electrics anywhere, radio, fan, windows...nothing. You get fed up put her in the garage, return at some point and she starts first time??? ( I should add, the immobilizer light goes off with the fob, but nothing?)
Having read the above, not sure if mine is the same problem? Could it be the start module?, ignition switch? or connection modules, dead short? or poor/broken earth from battery? or all of the above? Bloody irritating as it has just happened in the garage in the middle of the MOT (2nd year running!)

...any ideas on "your fog lights aren`t bright enough!!!!!! I don`t take it out in the bloody fog
Remove them for test ?As I understand it only "legally required lights" should be tested, this wouldn't include front fog lights

One of my 390SEs had what sounds the same as that problem of yours.Having read the above, not sure if mine is the same problem? If electrics go TOTALLY dead (no ignition lights) check your main earth straps !
