My gf has decided that we need to get rid of the artex the previous owners had done in one room on ceiling. Is the new pollycell stuff any good or should we board it like a local plasterer recommends?

Anyone used this method?

Just had a couple of rooms skimmed by a plasterer, around £200 each.

+1 depends though on the depth of the artex.

It's not deep but is it necessary to board it? Would mean we lose height that way.

No boarding needed, just a skim from a good plasterer.

Or could you pull off the plasterboard + artex (ie remove ceiling) and start from scratch? It works well for tiled walls.

Polycel is usually expensive crap.
If it's good, then it's still expensive.

If you want to fill, use warm water artex.
If you want to skim, use plaster (but learn to mix and use it)

Before either clean it and use PVA to make it stick....

I'd also listen to your plasterer.

As long as the ceiling is sound, There is no reason to re-board. Just a simple re-skim would be needed. As long as ceilng isn't over 5x5m expect to pay no more than £150(thats what i would charge)

cheers

Polycel products are absolute crap, Artex can be removed with a steamer but it is hard work!

Be careful though as some early artex contained asbestos.

Up until the mid 80s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artex

IMO the person who invented Artex should be beat to death with an cut-out of their own product. punch

I've got quite a lot to deal with in the loft conversion of my place. frown

Call a spread, you'll be amazed what they can get over. A mornings work for an cleared, average sized room, will still cost a days money tho.

Don't under any circumstances buy Smoothover.

It will cost as much as a spread and the result will be terrible.

I charge about £150 for an average ceiling.

Paying someone - thin skim

Doing it youself, tight skim of hardwall and 2 coats of joint cement with a light sand. DIY is 3 days (1.5 hours a day) and about £35 in materials
