I've had enough of getting my pants pulled down every time I trade cars - and have had a wonderous thought - imagine buying a car which is worth the same or more when you sell it! Amazing.

If thinking about 75k - 150k cost current or recent production cars, then how many are we talking about?

I reckon these must feature - any additions?

- Alfa 8C
- BMW Z8
- Vanquish S (maybe?)
- Lambo SE or superleggera

Or is it simply limited production and pretty- that's the secret?

I think its mainly the rare cars such as limited run ones that hold there value , of the cheaper cars <15k , i would say e30 m3, clio v6, mk4 r32

Thanks Caboosemoose - I remember watching Tiff reviewing a Z8 saying that at 50k it was good value. He was right! Anything else out there

My mate ran an Ariel Atom 300 for 2 years. With the spec he opted for it was £41k, and he sold it for £39.5k. £750 a year depreciation is pretty good considering it's one of the fastest machines money can buy (circumstances).

air cooled 911, e36 or e46 M3

M5 might be worth a look too now they are going to start putting rubbish engines in them.

Exige/Elise/VX220 just about immune to depreciation.

TVR Sagaris, or the T350 looking at current prices. However, might cost £2k a year to keep your 'investment' going!

Ford GT.

The problem with most exotics is that the running and maintenance costs more than make up for depreciation at £1000 - £3000 per service. The Ford GT is likely to be one exception.

Things woith limited supply, but enduring demand will maintain their value.

my 1988 morgan is probably worth today what it was when it was new. I think the 2nd hand aero maxes fetch pretty good prices when they are available.

Caterhams hold their value well.

Sports cars from a particular era tend to do well when guys who remember them from their youth get to be old enough to afford to run them as indulgences. On that basis, traditional British sports cars (MG's, Triumphs et al.) have prolly seen their best values, with the exception of particularly good examples or special models.

Also on that basis, 80's sports cars are prolly about to appreciate nicely. Somebody has already mentioned Ferrari 328's and air cooled Porsches. I'll add things like Merc SL's of the era, the SL that was around during the 90's and performance versions of the Merc 190E.

More recently, I suspect that the first gen BMW Z4 coupe will do well, because it's so very much prettier than the folding roof Z4.

Morgans? (More as a question than a suggestion.)

I'm not expecting to loose much, but there's quite a few of them so you don't have the rarity on your side.

If you go back to the 90's you could include; F40, 964RS and a few of the more limited edition 993's . . . . . even the standard ones are now worth more than the 996's that replaced them.

According to an article in EVO about supercars and costs the Mclaren SLR has settled at 150k and should not drop any more.
I think M6 will be one just like the M635CSI is now but that is way under your 75k.

On all of these miles will av et b elimited to keep the values I would have thought.

At the bottom end of the market if you buy a Classic Impreza Turbo or E36 M3 and keep it tidy I can't see you losing too much money. Might not make any but I can't see you losing much either

Polar 8 ,I know how you are feeling, after years of buying new high performance cars,I am frankly fed up with a) losing fortunes on them, and b) lots of faults with them.
I looked really hard at this, and noticed there is a lack of supply of lambo gallardos,I spoke to Amari who is the biggest seller if used gallardos in theUk and he told me that a lot of rhd cars have been shipped out of the country.I drove a few and fell in love with a grey manual spyder a few years old, parted with 80k for it,just been looking on the web and you cannot buy one now for under 85k ,normally i buy a car and i lose 20k when i sit in it for the first time. Also have to say it is off the scale for feel good fun, there are better drivers cars out there, but nothing puts a smile on your face like one of these.I think most used gallardos whilst not going to appreciate are going to depreciate quite slowly.
I also think with the move by the likes of ferrari away from manual boxes that manual supercars...the 430 ,gallardo ,gt3 etc are going to hold up quite well as frankly as good as some of these dual clutch boxes are they remove huge elements of fun from driving.

Fewer every day though (if you have an S1 or VX220) wink

I lost less than 10% on my second VX over two years and 20,000 miles. My first VX recently sold for £8,500, I sold it for £8,000 two years ago.
