Monitor quality and setup question

I have Samsung Syncmaster 245B monitor with a GeForce 7050PV video card. Viewing biggish jpegs - say 10Mb and greater - the images appear to lack definition and, at all sizes, highlights appear blown out. I appreciate that trying to view something say 5000 x 3000 pixels on a 1920 x 1200 monitor is not going to be without its compromises but I feel that I should be getting a better viewing experience.

I am not too bothered about total colour accuracy as I will never do anything so important that demands this but I would like to achieve a better compromise if there is one to be had. Your comments gratefully received.
