I have what may be an odd request for some advice.

I need a camera to help document my Healey Sprite rebuild. I am allowed to borrow the other half's camera, but I am somewhat wary of using it for fear of either dropping it, or getting oily rusty fingerprints all over it and the like.

So what I need is a reasonable, but not excellent, quality camera to use out in the garage to take car pics. It could do with being able to withstand a few knocks and bangs, and the ability to take short videos would be good for things like first engine start up and so on.

So what do you lot suggest? Budget is up to £100, maybe a little more for something worth while.

Fuji Z33WP would do the job - not explicitly marketed as shockproof (some are now, however not in budget) but the rubberised housing should be tougher than most. Waterproof to 3m too so if it gets grubby you can just wash it under the tap.

It is in budget (I paid £80 for mine). The rubber cover, however, has to be bought separately and they're about £15 from Fuji. But that doesn't cover the very nice (but large) glass screen so you would run the risk of breaking that in such a harsh environment.

Isn't there a camera that's marketed as being drop-proof?

The olmpus tough can take the worst beatings! We sell them to construction firms and they don't come back broken. Should be able to pick up the older model for that sort of mula in the uk.

Going right out on a limb, price wise, have you seen the results thet Get Carter has posted from his Go Pro video/stills device?

Way over budget of course but ruggedised capabilities and both still and video capability with the option to record journeys once the re-build is done. Just add it to the build budget .... wink

You do know that GoPro have no LCD screen or viewfinder? It could be sometimes tricky to take a picture of what you actually wanted... wink
