A colleague has a Golf GTDi with 180,000 miles on the clock.

This got me thinking, what is the highest ever recorded mileage people have seen?

i had an Octavia TDi with 297, 000 Miles on it, i was gutted when the engine started ticking badly so close to the 300, 000 figure!

Some fellow wanted it even with no power and sounding like a tank (more than usual), seen it driving around a few weeks after still the same so in my mind it got to 300, 000. I still maintain it was a great run about for me with the number of motorway miles i was covering.

I'm sure i read somewhere that there was a car still on the road with half a million on it ... might have been on PH i read it actually?

There's a Volvo with a million miles on somewhere I believe.

Highest I've seen is Mk3 Golf Diesel estate that was scrapped at 300,000.

I've seen some staggering numbers on taxis around the world. Often in metric, but even so...

My personal highest (Toyota LandCruiser 60 series):

It's in KM, so about 270,000 miles (and was still going strong I might add biggrin )

I've read about this car- I think he drives it from New York to the West Coast on a fairly regular basis. IIRC Volvo offered him a new car for free in exchange for his a few years ago but he turned it down.

Irv Gordon aims for 3 million miles in his Volvo P1800
American Irv Gordon - driver of the highest mileage vehicle on the road, a 1966 Volvo P1800 - has just turned 70. No he aims to reach an unmatchable record sometime in the next three years.

The two-seater sports coupe P1800 was presented at the auto show in Brussels 1960. Production started one year later, so 2011 the P1800 celebrates its 50 year anniversary. Almost 46,000 units of the famous Swedish sailor Pelle Petterson designed model were produced in various versions until production finished in 1973.

"I used to think I'd park it in a museum where people will get to enjoy seeing the car that beat the odds - all with the same engine, same radio, same axles, same transmission and of course the same driver,"
on the same ENGINE yes good work

I have it in my head, although I've not searched it, that some [American?] chap was given a new Saab by Saab as he'd clocked up 1,000,000 miles in his old (owned from new) 99 ?

I think this may hark back to a comment that EVO contributor Simon George made about his original Murcie, now on 150k or so miles, and if he clocked a million in that, he'd like a new LP670-4, please?

EDIT: just re-read the link for that P1800!
'kin 'ell - my 480ES struggled to get to 85k before I scrapped it when it was only 10 years old!

yes
Three brands I heard/read similar stories about:
Mercedes
Volvo
Saab

All about million-milers getting offered new cars for their old one.

I remember a story from a guy from turkey who had a taxi firm, he put over 4.000.000 miles on a Mercedes that was bought new and driven 24 hours a day for about 23 years, then Mercedes bought his car and put it in a museum and gave that man a brand new Mercedes!
