If you want something vaguely decent done by someone who even vaguely knows what they are doing it will total at more than 5k. Infact 5k is actually VERY cheap.

Go to the paving expert forum, work out what materials you need (even roughly) and you will see whats what then.

5k will likely get you a basic 90 degree herringbone block paved patio if its a very basic job, i.e no drains, steps, manholes etc. It won't buy any nice slabs though.

We paid £1000 for around 20sqm including all materials so I guess 5k would be about right.

I want labour only, i will supply all materials. so thats why i thought £5k was very pricey.

Very dependent on what's already there and the condition of the ground.

I'm assuming £5k includes muck away, stone up, lay (your supplied material) on a solid bed and point?

£55m2 doesn't sound out of the realms of being sensible depending on your location.

As always get a few quotes, ensure they are all quoting like for like (write a spec).

If you can't get someone on recommendation ask if he wouldn't mind giving you a few customer's contact details. Tradesmen with happy customers will do this with pleasure. Go and see his work, a happy customer will be only too pleased to show off their new patio!

just looked on paving expert, and their guide for mid range is around £1025 for 30 sqm. I think base is fairly solid so not sure there's a lot of ground work.

Sorry thought you meant supply and fit. 5k labour only does sound expensive unless its a very intricate job.

At the moment prices are all over the place, some are quoting less than cost and then banging loads of extras on and others are just quoting silly high.

It does make a massive difference where you are as well. Aggregate and muck away costs differ hugely up and doen the country.

Got a big hole i want filling in the garden with the waste, so not even that expense. Dont think its anything to complicated.

Do you intend to use natural stone? If so maybe you could chat to my Wife (Sam) here............

http://www.mandarinstone.com/contact

Based in their HQ at Monmouth.

She/they will give you all the advice you need. Obviously they will try and sell their product to you.;) They have a list of recommended installers. If you are anywhere near where I live my Mate and I could do the work.

5K does sound a tad high if it's a straight forward job with not many awkward shapes/cuts.

Just did 16m2 myself, over a few weekends, was very thereputic work (apart from mixing the mortar for the pointing as I didn't have a drill attachment to do it). I daren't add up the bills from Wickes though!

Drill attachment? What sort of mix did you use?

I used the 10kg tubs of grey mortar. Mixing a bit at a time in a bucket. Strains the forearms if you do too much in one go. Was going to buy the drill attachment to do the mixing but would never used it again. Apart from that I really enjoyed doing the patio.
