In the £200 price bracket..

I was given a mountain bike by a mate about 4 months ago as he had a new one, this was to see if I enjoyed riding to work or not and to save me shelling out on a bike if I wasn't going to stick at it

Anyway 4 months on and I average 3 days and week and love it, but the bike is starting to suffer and creak and groan

So I'm gonna buy myself a hybrid

The thing is I can only really justify £200 - £300 for a bike as all my money is going into my car savings at the moment

At this budget do I buy a Carrera Subway 2 from Halfords for about £250 or something similar or get onto Gumtree and try and get something better specced but secondhand for my money

I think I need a 20" frame but am not sure (I am 6' 1" and I think my inside leg is 31 inches)

Any advice welcome

You say Hybrid, if it's for basic commuting what about a Specalised Globe Hybrid City Bike?

It is just for basic commuting, that looks ok, out of my price range though unless I go second hand

ETA: I do tend to engage in commuter racing though so want something that will make me faster than I currently am

Spend the money on maintaining your existing bike? It probably only needs a service and maybe a new bottom bracket. Total cost £50

To be honest, it sat in my mates shed rusting for a good few months before he gave it to me, its a mountain bike (non susp) so I would want to change the tires too, as well as all the gear and brake wires that are rusting, I did contemplate it but thought I would end up spending maybe 100-150 all in and therefore better off getting a new one?
