Nurburgring Route Suggestions?

Hi all,

Having read Tony's great write-up of his trip to the Nurburgring I've decided to book myself in for a night and have a go on it on my way down to Limoges for a week in France in September.

I was wondering if any of you could think of any 'must do' roads that I should try to go via on my trip?

The main waypoints of my route are:

Calais -> Nurburgring (in a day - then do the 5-7pm session that night)
Nurburgring -> Limoges (in a day the following day)
Limoges -> Angouleme (return trip in a day later that week)
Limoges to Calais (in a day)

If any of know think there's a good route or set of twisties to try on any of the legs of this trip then please drop me a note as i'm really looking forward to taking my Tiv on it's first proper trip and it would be great to hear any recommendations!

If you head via Spa and then drop down to Malmedy and cut across country it's a rather lovely drive.

An awesome journey is to head across to Bad Munstereifel from Malmedy and then down into the Ring.

The roads around Bad Munstereifel are pretty much the best around there for a Tivver.

if your using the ferry (as opposed to tunnel) then id recommend going via dunkirk not calais with Norfolkline
its a lot cheaper than the alternatives and you start closer to the Belgian border
(the upgrade to 1st class is well worth it too)

as for the route, well i simply used my sat nav

i did this in June (we were 50 miles south of limoges)
it is a long journey (over 500 miles for us) - which in our case was not helped by the fact we didnt use any peage as weve found the drive is always much more interesting that way.
but its certainly doable

again sat nav is the recommended way of routing.

If you're gonna "do" the 'Ring, I beleive you should have a good read of Ben Lovejoys site.

it's full of great info, and remember, if you destroy armco, you must pay... on the spot!
and if you drop oil & someone else crashes becuase of it, you are liable for their repairs.

Sounds a great trip Anders!!

Calais to Ring...
Motorway to beyond Liege, south to Verviers on E42 all the way to Prum, then 410 to Gerolstein/Kelberg then 257 to Mullenbach & Ring. In some ways I actually enjoy that route more than than the Ring itself sometimes!

Ring to Limoges...
Not sure of roads beyond Champagne if going in direction of Limoges. If it were me I'd take an extra day (or even 2 if poss) for this leg and head south through Germany as far into Switzerland as time will allow before turning west for Limoges.

If you did want to take the direct route to Limoges go via Reims and take a look at the old F1 GP pits.

From Limoges there's a little bridge at Millau that is also reachable.

Not sure if you know this already, but there's the historic race meeting in Angouleme in Sept.

My advice for the frist leg of the trip, is to take the E40 from Calais all the way to Aachen (junction 40) then take the 258 all the way to Nurburg as I believe it is the quickest way to the ring,the only problem you may face is timing, when I went I caught the 0900 ferry from Dover and still oly got the the ring about 7.00 ish leaving just 30 mins of ring time left, and if it is closed due to an accident (very common) as it was when I got there you might not get any laps in at all, I managed to get one lap in that's all on the first evening, having said that in my opinion it was worth it just for that one lap alone.
Good luck and go for it but "BE CAREFUL"

10 hours to get to the Ring from Calais?!!!

I think this chap is driving. You should try it next time, much easier on the feet

We left Dover at 09.00 arrived in calais at 10.30 which becomes 11.30 with time difference, by the time you are unloaded and hit the road it is about 11.45 or so, we got to the hotel at 6.30 to check in and dump our bags so it took us 6.5 hours or so to get there (290miles), that is with Belgium road works knackering the job,and a good stop for dinner etc, also we took it fairly steady (70mph ish) as it is a long way there and back for an old car let alone the punishment the car gets on the ring itself, simples.

its about 300 miles of mostly motorway/autobahn.
took me about 4.5 - 5 hrs last time i did it, and i wasnt in any hurry at all

I agree there is no point in rushing, but that time still suggests that your food required cutlery. That has to be a strict no no on a road trip surely?

Agree with that but the quickest route is not always the "best". The roads around the Nurburgring, including those I suggested above to get there, are superb. Time your journey right and as long as you are not on the Brussels ring road during morning or evening rush hours you can normally get there in a comfortable 5.5 hours with a refreshment / pee / fuel break (roadworks etc permitting of course ).

Just done the 'Ring in the wifes Freelander (2 laps) absolutely BRILLIANT (and watched WRC near Trier)

Took just over 4 hours to drive from Kelberg to Dunkirk using just motorways

E40 and E42 - steady 75mph (satnav) 06:30 - 11:45

a few road works but only 15mins hold ups.

Many thanks for your briliant feedback and comments and ideas on my posting - i'm really looking forward to it!

Needless to say if any of you are free on Monday Sept 27th and fancy joining me for a blast around the track that evening just drop me a PM. I've booked myself on the 9:20 folkestone to calais eurotunnel and should be in France by 10:55. With suggestions that it will take around 5-6 hours to get to the ring from there i'd expect to arrive around 4:30pm in time for the 5-7pm circuit opening.

Have booked www.burgstube.com for the night then will press on to Limoges (but am now tempted to delay that a day and take a more "scenic" route through Switzerland (as long as both me and my Tiv are in one piece!!)

The afternoon of Mon 27th is when the Euro tour crosses the channel in the other direction on our way home from the Alps. Now, is it worth thinking about a one night extension for some Ring time? From Sunday night hotel in Troyes to Ring is 4 and a bit hours. With some time in Champagne in the morning, lunch on the way in Luxemburg and some good roads in Germany to sample we'd easily arrive before the barrier goes up for the evening session. Seriously tempting...

Seriously tempted to go on the 27th to join for a lap. It's 200 km from where I live. I couldn't join the EURO trip with Longers but would be great if some of them could join as well.

It would be great if any of you could join me - I may have a friend coming along in his limited edition MG Costello V8 which is quite a car!

I'll start planning a route over the next week or two and get the Tiv prepped for its journey. Cheers for all the feedback and great route tips!

Come on Han, if some of us can do it I'm sure you can manage 200km! Would be good to see you and Anita again.

And yes the B258 to Mayen is great, I went there for lunch once and would love to return
