Where to stay in Barcelona?
Discussion
Hi guys
Looking to go to Barca for a few nights with the missus. We want to do the touristy stuff, some shopping but also spend a day on the beach. Plan would be to eat out breakfast/lunch/dinner every day.
Where is the best area to stay? We would like a hotel with rooftop pool. There are a number of these just outside of the city. I unsure whether getting the metro/cabs all the time from outside the city will be a lot of hassle. I have also heard that there is a lot of development outside the city and we don't want to be stuck in a construction site.
Any suggestions? Either specific hotels or general ideas.
Thanks

Very very nice, but probably very very expensive too.

We stayed in the Hotel Montblanc Barcelona for a few days last October. It has a pool open during the summer months (don't know if it's on the roof), plus a restaurant (didn't try it, there are plenty of other places to eat in the area). The hotel itself is - erm, average... - but the location is superb. It's right at the top of the Via Laietana, close to Placa Catalunya, Las Ramblas, and the Barrio Gotico.
Edited to add:
It's easy to get to the beach, La Sagrada Familia, and Parc Guell on public transport. Alternatively, there are plenty of taxis - which don't seem to be too expensive.

Watch out for the pickpocket gangs on the metro - they are very competent and our group witnessed a number of people lose their wallets. Stayed in the Royal hotel on Las Ramblas in 2004:

Was a pretty decent hotel and the location can't be beat.

We stayed at the H10 Marina last year. Nice hotel with very good brekky, and a rooftop pool. Area OK - not great, but OK. 10 mins to some great beaches and some good restaurants. 5 mins to the underground to get into town, but you can walk it.

By far this is the best hotel for your requirements. I stayed here for a week in May.Very very nice, but probably very very expensive too.
Roof top pool, right by the beach and next to a load of decent restaurants / bars / clubs (it's not noisy though). You don't have to leave the vacinity of the hotel if you don't want to.
Great service but it is fairly expensive.

I stayed there and was a decent enough hotel, although I think we were just on room only so can't vouch for the food. Easy enough to get into town.Edited by fatboy b on Monday 16th August 17:15

Stayed in the Diagonal Zero last year and found it perfect for a leisure break - got upgraded to an executive suite which gave free access to the roof pool and snacks/ booze... It's a little bit out of the city but had a metro station opposite and found using the trains to be no problem at all, though had to watch out for the aforementioned pickpockets... Had a nose around the Silken Diagonal (different management, on the same road) as well which was slightly more central and very nice too!

Have you considered renting an apartment?
That's what we're looking for just now for first weekend in Sept., last time we did this though we ended up in Prague.Near the beach (15mins walk) would be good, somewhere buzzy but not bangy...?
