Hi folks,

There is a strong possibility that we may be buying a (fair sized) plot of land with a view to building a new home in the near future.

We will need to sell our place to fund this, and I was wondering if there were any decent alternatives to renting a small place while the building work goes on.

I was thinking along the lines of a small chalet type building in the garden, as a temporary home?

anyone got any view on this?

Many thanks

A lot of people use an on-site mobile home for the duration.

Many static sites insist that the MHs are replaced every 10/20 years so there are bargains to be had.

Once finihed building you can resell or scrap it.

First result on Google has a few from £3.5K http://www.joalleisure.com/buy-used-static-caravan...

Couple of grand for an old one

Not wonderful place to live but at the end of the build you get to set fire to it

My Family own this company http://www.stately-albion.co.uk/AboutStately-Albio...

I sold up years ago to the other Family members. Problem here is you may not want to move out once you've lived in one hehe

Mail Me if you need info.

I am liking the idea of a static... What is the score with electricity/gas/water? Are they easy to hook up?

Electricity is easy one cable coming in

Water One pipe coming in to supply water pressure

Gas easy carry a bottle to the back of the caravan and plug in

Drains

This is hard as you need to have a 4 inch connection to connect into other wise you will have to hire a portaloo for stting in and a sneaky soakaway for grey water drains

Not a problem as the OP is building a house. His first 'job' :snigger: will be to lay the slab and sort out the drains etc.

We're hoping to start work on our extensions in the spring - this involves ripping out floors, stairs, etc.

I spoke to an acquaintance who runs a site full of park homes. He said that if we weren't going to be in a caravan for long then a £3000 caravan would be "adequate"; however, if we were going to be in over one or more winters then it would be worth looking at a decent second-hand park home which wouldn't lose much value in the time we had it.

He didn't have any to sell so I don't think he was anything but honest; he suggested looking at Stately, Omar, or Tingdene as possible makes.

Dicky - since one of those names is your family's firm, what sort of price would a second-hand home be? Feel free to PM if you prefer.

Cheers,
Steve

Well, as it goes, Her-insida-de-doors has decreed that it'll have to be a rental house nearby.

Not so bad really, we can rent near friends and that way, I can spend more time in the pub!

cheers for the info anyway chaps!
