If a car has crashed in a ditch for example due to driver error, is it down to the car owner to get it removed? If so how long do they have to shift it?
Wondering because there is a mustard colour Ford Focus in a deep ditch on the A36 Warminster bypass, it has the 'police aware' tape over it and has been 'parked' there for over a week now.

In my experience yes the drivers responsibility. This of course assumes that the driver/owner is known and hasn't abandoned the car (probably more complex if the car was stolen and the insurance company are being slow).

There was an AUDI RS4 parked in a field near to where I live for over 2 weeks last year.

I called the police and nothing was done about it. I'm thinking that it probably wasn't stolen. Maybe the police only do something if there was a crime involved??

It disappeared after a while!!

Can also depend on whats in the field and when its going to be harvested, had a farmer in the area last year who refused to let an owner recover his car from said farmers field until he had harvested his crop, unless the car driver was prepared to compensate him for the damaged crops where the truck whould have to go in for the recovery.

Blimey is that still there? God knows how they managed it, its hardly a tricky bit of road.

If on a motorway, it would be removed very quickly, either by the Police duty garage (if required for forensics, or if driver has been arrested) or by HA statuary recovery if not required by police. but it's also correct that if it's gone through the fence onto someone's property, then the landowner needs to give permission for the recovery if it's HA organised.

Went past the accident site yesterday and the car is still sitting in the ditch with police tape around it!

if the owner has died ( and lets face it they could have during or after the crash for completely unrelated reasons) it could take a very long time I suspect.

When I ditched a car, the police came and arranged recovery for me. I didn't even have to pay for it.

It's unusual for a car to be ditch for more than a day or so. I'd get on to the Environment agency to chase up the cars removal. Failing that let some locals know and it'll be stripped overnight tonight.

There's a biggish 4x4 of some description been on a verge at the side of the A51 into Chester for about a month - it seems to gradually sinking! Even though there's no housing around I'm amazed it hasn't been vandalised - I've seen that happen overnight in other apparently quiet places.

It's a had a notice stuck on it for the last few days so presumeably it's going to be removed by the council.

I thought it was a bit of an odd place to have crashed it too, and was surprised to see it was still there on my way back through on Sunday!
