I've got a Nikon d5000, and I've got on pretty well with the 18-55 kit lens but I want something else. I have a bit of cash, and can get some vouchers so I'll be getting some filters, a tripod, and I think it's time to get a new lens.

Does anyone have any advice for what sort of lenses to look at? I've looked at the 55-200 Nikon Lens, which actually isn't too expensive. I need a AF-S lens, as the d5000 body does not have a motor in it.

Obviously this lens will give me a greater shooting distance, but are there other lenses that I should look at.. Which might give me a different type of shot?

Realy depends on what you want to shoot!

options are:
Wide angle - landscapes, buildings, odd perspectives - sigma 10-20 etc
Fast prime - shallow depth of field, arty, street, nikon 35f1.8, 50f1.4 etc - Challenge here is finding an AF-S one.
Macro - take closeup shots and shots of small things, often good as potrait lenses.
Telephoto zooms - big range here but depends on what you realy want to shoot, motorsports, birds, landscapes?!

Theres a whole other range of lenses too, tilt shift, fisheye, longer primes etc/

Just got a 70 - 300 afs Nikon for my d5000. Best thing I have purchased in a while. Yes it was just over 300 quid but worth every penny.

Buy one.

Not a mark on it, all packaged up correctly in bags with all parts present - just as new - from ebay.

He had another one but I see its gone now.

Set an ebay email when they get listed and you should save a bit of money. Or buy one of these ;-)
