Nice restaurant in Surrey for a birthday meal for OH
Discussion
Hi guys,
hoping someone can help - I'm looking for a nice place for a meal and the criteria are:
1) It's for my OH's birthday, just the 2 of us
2) It's not a 'big' birthday i.e. it doesn't end in a 0 or a 5
3) We are getting married about a week later so cost is a factor for once
4) trying not to do a chain restaurant if possible
Picky I know
We live in Surrey outside of the M25, north of Guildford but most places are reachable. I know this is a crap description but any suggestions please?

Running Horses is nice.
If you like fish, you could also try Bryce's at the Old School House in Ockley. Just don't have the scampi (note to Bryces - scampi is smallish chunks of indeterminate seafood fried in breadcrumbs. Not huge f* off bit of sea monster in dodgy batter. When one has a hangover, poshed up scampi are not appreciated!).

If you don't mind going about 20 miles away to Copthorne, West Sussex (near Gatwick), then this place is highly recommended:

Fantastic setting, rustic with low ceilings, excellent service, and the food is superb. Not the most expensive, but not the cheapest either... for the a la carte dinner menu expect around £30-£40 per head, excluding drinks. There is a promotion on at the moment for 20% off your bill in July/Aug.

Thanks deeen, will give them a call. I presume you've eaten there and recommend it?
Yes, I go a couple of times a year. £20 - £25 / head, + drinks. Very good real ale, good food, great traditional pub with slightly more posh atmosphere in reastaurant.
I'm curious about some of the other comments now... I must try the old restaurant and the place in cobham sometime!

I enjoyed the michelin starred resto in Pennyhill park. Spending the night in a lovely room and chilling out in the spa the next day was pretty cool too. If it's your intention, your OH will love you forever if you organised this. They do combination deals so have a look at the website.

Thanks prand, we actually do that once or twice a year. But with the wedding et al only a week or so later, I didn't want to over shadow the big day.kelk said:

I think at the moment I'm doing better than the OH but even she is quite level headed. Of course, we've got 3 weeks left and all is going relatively smoothly. Now if that isn't the Murray Walker kiss of death nothing is.
As for Pennyhill, we are due a free upgrade next time we go as they did manage, uncharacteristically, to mess up a few key elements of service. So the next time should be absolutely fantastic as theyare usually very good anyway.

LOL, I'm sure you will be fine, everything gets a momentum of its own and it all just ends up happenining and being brilliant. I thought too all was going great till the week before, something just clicked and I was a wreck until it was all over!
