Off to Dublin shortly, would like to pick your brain for the best things to do

So far we've got:

Visit Temple Bar – area with bars, restaraunts etc
Dublin Castle
Porterhouse – Microbewery pub
The Cobblestone – Live music venue (Traditional)
Bobo’s – Burger bar

Any other things to fill the day up? Tours or ruins etc?

If you haven't been before I'd recommend going on one of the bus tours during the day, then you can hop on and off at whatever places take your fancy. Dublin zoo is a worth a visit and the Guinness factory even if it is just to say you've been and to have a drink in the bar at the top.

I'm only a culchie, but I often head to The Big Shmoke for a weekend. Might be worth asking a few locals in the Ireland forum as well?

The Natural History Museum is open again after some refurbs, and it's free.
Trinity College is always nice to wander about in for an hour, there's the Library and the Book of Kells to see as well.

Do the Viking tour instead of the open top tour, it goes down the Liffey too!

Templebar can get a bit full of stags and assorted pissheads, but there are loads of other great pubs around the city to consider, such as Doheny & Nesbits on Baggot Street, or Kehoe's on Anne st, off Grafton St, or Mulligan's, Poolbeg Street.

Try St Michans Church, to see the "bodies" - very good http://www.sacred-destinations.com/ireland/dublin-...

and the Old Jameson Distillery http://www.heritageisland.com/attractions/old-jame...

and not forgetting The Guinness Storehouse http://www.guinness-storehouse.com/en/Index.aspx

Also visit the Post Office on O'Connell Street to see the bullet holes from the 1916 rising against the Brits.

Its a lovely friendly city, I have been there several times and have friends living just up the coast. If I think of any more I will post again. Enjoy!

Been twice on day trips thanks to cheapo 1p ryanair flights. The zoo is worth a trip, found the Guiness factory tour a tad boring but then again I don't drink.

Gone yet?

I like the Soldiers and Chiefs Exhibition at the National Museum, Collins Barracks Annexe.

A trip out to Howth Head (about ten miles) by bus/train gives you lovely panoramic views over the entire city and bay area.

Me too, to both biggrin

I popped over last year for my 30th. I had the obligatory free pint at the Gravity bar, I also had the girlfriend’s pint too. I then paid the Rotunda a visit to see where it all started.

I belong to a much earlier generation of Rotunda babies (1958).

I don't pay visits to hospitals if I can help it. The nearest to a hospital visit I've made in recent years as a trip into the Jervis Street Shopping Centre. As I kid I had my tonsils removed in the old Jervis Street hospital. When I'm browsing in the Jervis Centre Waterstones I often wonder where I am in relation to the operating theatre where the deed was done.

I don't blame you for not wanting to visit the hospital.

I only paid the Rotunda a visit as my girlfriend wanted to see it (she'd read a bit about it) and it was 30 years to the day since I was born there.

I can imagine Dublin was a very different place when you were growing up there!! smile

It was essentially a collections of slums and semi-derelict buildings with a couple of nice squares and streets keeping the rubbish bits apart.
Still there was a sort of dilapidated charm about the place which is fading rapidly.
I find myself getting lost really easilly these days, especially out around the western suburbs (Finglas, Blanchardstown etc). Even my home area (Baldoyle-Howth) can cause me problems in working out where I am.
