How do you remove duck tape from paintwork ?

Unfortunately last weekend someone broke into my Senator outside the house and took a screw driver to the door. This broke the window and to stop water getting in - I was not expecting the weather to be so good - I taped some cardboard and a bin liner over the hole as the garage holds the Chimaera and I did not want anyone taking a screwdriver to that !

I have got the door frame and window fixed, however Inow have a different problem - How do I remove the sticky bits of paint from the body of the car without ruining the paintwork ?

Any ideas anyone ?

i think its best to use Tar remover as this is a solvents and will desolve the glue from the duct tape.

I dont know what else to use but tar remover is safe on the paintwork...

The best thing I've found for getting rid of gluey bits off body work is a quick squirt of WD40. Let it soak in and rub gently.

Seek advice from your local bodyshop supplier(car paint supplier). It is likely that panel wipe used to derease paintwork prior to respraying will remove it but it depends on the adhesive. If anyone suggests thinners or MEK ignore them cos it will take the paint off too. Hope it helps

I've used Ronsonol lighter fuel before - very good as it breaks down the sticky stuff quickly.

I used to work in a chemical laboratory. The best thing I found was white spirit. There is one slight drawback in that it removes any polish from the area you apply it to and will end up cloudy. If you finish by a good polish itshould come up lovely. Try it inside your door or on some obscure area just to be absolutley sure though, im sure it will be fine.

Thanks for the info - I have some tar remover, some white spirits and petrol in the garage.

Good idea to try them on somewhere where it won't show. Something for me to do this evening.

You might want to try ethanol (Vodka will do at a pinch but meths will be better) it'll dissolve the glue with minimal risk to paintwork, again it'll remove any polish on there though.

Try sticky stuff remover. Honest, it works on a surprising number of things. You can get it from those Betterware catalogues that drop through your letterbox. Sometimes there is something of use in them! Not sure whats in it, but it has a citrus/lemon smell. Won't damage your paintwork, but lifts most sticky deposits with little effort.

Isopropanol ( spelling) if you know any computer engineers or perhaps a PC supplier, brilliant for removing sticky stuff.
And if you feel stressed just give it a good old sniff - actually that could be dangerous so don't do it.
