Any thoughts on where (and how) I might buy a load of this in Surrey? I'm thinking Jewsons, but are there better alternatives?

One weeny problem is that the large Jewson lorries (and they only come in large) wouldn't make it onto my driveway (restricted access) so would have deliver a distance away which would be a pain....

Try http://www.meakin.co.uk

They have a depot in Guildford, had lots of stuff from them before. Otherwise search for other building material suppliers in the area. Smaller independents may have smaller wagons than the big companies.

I once had a neighbour who worked for RMC. He kindly brought me a trailer-load of free shingle as a favour. So you could try asking concrete companies.

You can (feckin can't remember the name) tarmac stuff which has a layer of shingle embedded onto it!

Depending on access you can get 2 tonnes delivered in a 4 yard skip from some places - smaller skip lorries might fit down your drive?
Or get bulk bags (£5 each!) and hire a 2t dumper truck - they're only 5-6' wide. The hi-ab can load a bag onto the dumper, and away you go. Slashing the bags makes placement dead easy - you can spread it out as you go.
If access is really restricted it's wheelbarrow time.
If you can get bulk bags placed on something with a bit of height (another bulk bag, wifes car bonnet, that sort of thing..) you can carefully cut the bag and almost pour the stones into a barrow a bit at a time - saves digging.
And whatever quantity they say you'll need, you'll need more. Trust me banghead
