"Irish homeowners can now legally use guns to defend themselves if their homes are attacked under new legislation. The new home defense bill has moved the balance of rights back to the house owner if his home is broken into "where it should always have been", say top Irish police. The police association of superintendents and inspectors, the AGSI, stated that “the current situation, which legally demands a house owner retreat from an intruder, was intolerable". The new bill was published by Justice Minister Dermot Ahern"

Good or bad?

I don't need the law to change. I have a shotgun. If I catch someone in my house, I will shoot them. Once in each leg for starters.

Me too and I've got a boat, some large rocks, some rope and a chartplotter that tells me the deepest part of the English Channel to drop the body(ies) in to avoid any unnecessary time-wasting with the police and court system. smile

Sounds like it brings them into line with UK law in allowing the use of reasonable force to defend yourself.

Not quite, in the UK you can not use a gun to shoot any intruder unless the intruder has a gun........

The basis of Irish law IS English Law (after all, you ruled the country for the best part of 800 years).
The concept of "reasonable force" has always been part of Irish Law - just like in England.

The debate in both English and Irish Law has always mean the interpretation of what constitutes "reasonable force".

Good.

There should be absolutely no doubt in either party's mind that we are free to defend ourselves, our family, and our property.

I have a fully automatic UZI, Russian AK47, and a M4. All I had to do was pay $200 for a federal permit.

Be careful stating something as a fact when it isn't. "Poetic Licence" often equates to "totally wrong".

Good on them!
About time somebody agreed to this. Hopefully intruders may think twice about it now!

When applying for a firearms licence, in Northern Ireland one can state 'self-defence' as a valid reason.
